The factory spec is 80w/90 or 75w/90 non synthetic.

I would recommend staying with regular non-syn hypoid gear oil, it protects the gears better under extreme use (as recommended to me by our gear manufacturer).

I'm running full synthetic in my '83 928 S 5-speed, 1984 944 and 1990 944 S2 Cab, and they love it.

THe 1984 944 was really making noise from the transaxle, but the synthetic gear lube (AMSOIL) quieted it down, and made shifting into second gear sooooo much easier when cold. The synthetic is far superior in "All" spec ratings to the mineral too, better GL ratings, better film, less friction, cooler running.

On high milage cars, I recommend going with the 75W90 but tossing in at least one quart of 75W140.
