I’ve always had the accounts for my small limited company prepared by a smallish local firm.

A few months ago my accountant passed away so my business has been passed to one of his colleagues.

I’ve just sent her the figures over for the 18/19 year for preparation of the accounts and she’s come back to me asking for sight of every scrap of paper that supports the figures so she can check it for herself. I queried the need for this work with unaudited accounts and pointed out that nothing had been asked for in the previous 14 years. She told me that this is now required for “compliance reasons and gdpr regulations”.

I’ve got nothing to hide here, but it’s not an insignificant task to have all this sent over to her if there’s no real need for it. Is there a need?

At a guess I would say she's newly, or partly, qualified and hasn't got a clue what she is doing.

Whenever our accountants send someone new in to do the basics they always ask daft irrelevant questions until we have reprogrammed them....

She is talking rubbish. I like to check some key figures and perform some "reality checks" on them (bank balances, debtors and creditors balances, VAT, PAYE etc) but you don't need to see everything.

And GDPR has nothing to do with thee work performed by an accountant for a non-audit client.

If there's anything dodgy it's going to be you in the firing line, not her, so I'm not sure why she's being so picky.

That was my thought too, some kind of upselling, but she assures me that there will be no extra charge for all this work she wants to do.

I’m going to sling all my purchase receipts and bank statements in a box and send them to her. If she wants to waste her time checking all my figures she can do.

What a waste of effort! Like Eric above I would just check the essentials and leave the details to you. Hike in fees, but you say she has promised not 😀
