I recently had a bike accident which resulted in me smashing/losing my watch. My insurance company are paying me out £3850 to get another watch. However, I have another watch so intend buying whatever watch is popular and selling it on at a reduced price.

It has been suggested to me that an Omega Moonwatch or Seamaster or a TAG Heuer steel automatic chronograph would be the most sensible buy with the view to sell on.

Any thoughts or advice please?

Have you asked the insurance company for a cash settlement?

Tags don’t have a great resale value and even with an Omega Speedmaster/Seamaster you would be looking at recouping 70% if your lucky.

What watch did you lose in your accident?

Take cash otherwise you will be stuck buying something new and overpriced.

If it would help you I can currently buy vouchers for Ernest Jones using my corporate discounts at 15% discount for the next 4 days, before the offer returns to 8.5%.

That would lessen your loss slightly on resale.

PM me if I can help

Tudor Black Bay GMT? Would be best to hold value in that price bracket I would think.

Would it not be easier to see if anyone you know needs to buy and engagement ring or something and sell them the vouchers? Sell it to them for £100 less?

That would be ideal - it's just finding a buyer !

Plenty of used ones available right now on line with box and papers for much less than the OP’s budget.

Even second hand they're actually "hovering" closer to £5k currently if Chrono24 is to be believed.

The OP was talking new watches from a dealer to be bought with vouchers from his insurers so I doubt second hand values would have come into the equation anyway.

£80 loss (obviously more as they’ll buy below) If you buy new and sell immediately?

If you are looking for a return on your money or a safe bet then only Rolex will do at that price.
You may find an explorer , no box or papers. However if you do then tell me where you got it!

A datejust , president in steel will hold. You may be able to find a mid eighties Tudor Submariner for under 4k.
The original Heur Autavias are increasingly collectable aswell.

If you just want a nice watch then go for an Omega Speedmaster.

Good luck and enjoy!

I thought the OP just wanted to buy a watch that he could immediately sell, even though it’ll be at a loss.

Are you talking about the 42mm later model? I was referring to the earlier 40mm e.g. https://www.chrono24.co.uk/rolex/explorer-ii-16570...

But if the OP is only after a new watch then I guess it doesn't matter anyway!
