Can anyone recommend a satnav app for my iPhone.

Something that works off line and ideally free...

Thanks

Not tried it myself but a number of the Old Gits are looking at the MyRouteApp navigation option. As well as route planning and recording they also have a new feature of navigation. Might be worth a look.

Doesn't google maps allow you to download their maps to use without data?

Used this app a few years ago when I drove to Paris, struggled with the roads around charles de gaulle airport (possibly any sat nav app would), apart from that was fine.

TomTom Go downloads maps offline and worth a look at too.

Yes.
Sadly it does not allow you to run maps offline (Wifi mode as its called) but still get live traffic info/routing.

Yes. But there's limitations. For example it's way points are temperamental, and it still uses 4G/3G for slight alterations, so you can find it will not let you re-route.

I.e. do not precisely hit waypoint, cannot delete, cannot re-route, so you're without sat nav until signal strength improves.

I swear by google maps, but I imagine there's better stuff out there.

You can download maps of an area and use the navigation without internet signal. Just not alter the route or receive live info.

I've previously used Copilot app on my phone. Always very happy with that.

Agreed - if you absolutely have to be offline, it's not great.

With the offline maps downloaded it is very economical with data while roaming though - it used <10Mb while I was away in Germany a couple of years ago.

+1, never had any issues with pre-downloaded maps and data usage is then minimal (or off if you really must). I thought in Europe mobile operators weren't able to charge extra for roaming data any more?

I've used this for a while and it's usually pretty good. Remember to download the maps before you go though!

Do you need to be offline? Roaming charges don't exist (for now anyway)...

Agreed, I use google maps normally but its not so good offline and seems to take an age to re-route if you go wrong, which it did particulary badly yesterday hence the question!

Thanks for the contributions so far.

I use Sygic. It's free and has the map data stored. Just need to pay for extras like camera locations or fancy voices

I go to France most years, did 4500 miles through France and Italy last summer, use Google maps and Waze for the short hops

You only use data for routing, and anyway, data is really cheap these days anyway, the mapping was superb and we didnt get lost, miss any turns, not find anywhere etc.

I dont get why you need anything else unless you are driving a specialist vehicle with restrictions ie Motorhome, Lorry etc

Another vote from me for CoPilot. I used it all round Scandinavia, it works off the GPS chip so no data usage (unless you want the traffic info).

With any Satan’s app, I’d recommend having a good play around with it well before any trip, so you can operate it easily, as well as setting any onscreen options you might want, like ETA, speed, speed limit.

Its just a shame you can't use Google maps offline, but still get live traffic updates, uses a little data, but nothing wallet breaking.
