DMX help

Afternoon and apologies if this is not the place to ask but I'm pretty hopeful

We run a small festival in our garden to raise money for meningitis now, over the last couple of years I've bought some lights.

6 old par cans with normal bulbs in and 10 showtec rgb led ones which I believe have 6 dmx channels each.

I was going to buy something like this to allow me to use the old lights with dmx

I don't want to do anything overly flashy (pardon the pun) but would like to be able to have a few standard routines set up that I can activate with the press of a button. I'd also like the rgb ones to all flash with the same colour sequence when in auto music mode.

Can anyone recommend a controller that will handle that?
I can run it form laptop if needs be or an ipad but I'd rather have a bit of hardware if possible.
Clearly I don't want to spend much.

Hi,

A couple of ways to look at it. The first is a foot pedal control as below. This will control your LED par cans directly (this one is up to 4 channels), then link out of your last par can into your dimmer/controller for your generic pars. Set the DMX address on the dimmer to start the next channel up from the LED's and you should be able to control each dimmer channel. The pedal is using the DMX address and doesn't see or care what's on the end as it were, as it's controlling the dimmer and the dimmer is controlling the light. It might be that you need a pedal with more channels, but worth looking at. This is just an example.

The second way is to have a dedicated desk as below. This basically works the same as the pedal, but more functionality. Also don't operate it with your feet! DMX works as a chain, so you can control 512 channels from one universe, so should be an easy solve. Just watch out for the connector type. Pro gear is generally 5 pin and the lower end/disco equipment 3 pin. With the 3 pin you can use standard mic cable, however depending on the equipment it can sometimes cause a few issues. You can also buy 5 pin - 3 pin convertors. If your linking devices, it's also worth having a DMX terminator plugged in the final piece of kit. It goes into the final link out/through. In your case this would be the dimmer.
