Remember the Bran Flakes ad from the 80s, "tasty, tasty, very very tasty"?

If I wanted to use that in an ad today, would I have any issues? There is no music as such, only 'singing', and the words would be different, but is using the 'tune' itself a problem?

Wasn't sure if Music or Business would be best for this, I guess GetCarter might be the guy with the answer... or any suggestions where else I might find out? Google isn't really helping.

Someone who's more than just a "spare bedroom producer" will hopefully be along soon to give you a definitive answer, but off the top of my head... someone will own the melody and you'll need to find out who that is and obtain a synchroniseation licence from them to use it on an advert. It may have been licensed exclusively for use on the Bran Flakes advert in which case you're probably screwed.

Wasn't that melody based on another? Can't recall which but I'm pretty sure it was based on another song.

Interesting, thanks. I did find a video of it (lost it again!) where someone mentioned the agency that made it but I couldn't find anything on them.

Having listened again here is music in it but I wouldn't need that. I really only need a few people singing about 5s of it, with (some) different words and no music to achieve what I want.

Why can't we just steal any old thing we want? Licences? Pfft! rolleyeshehe

Ummmm, not wanting to come over all technical, but singing is music.

Somebody will have written both the words and the music and the license will be held by them or the body that commissioned them. Any attempt at using either without permission and payment will likely end up in a letter from a law firm.

If you want to find out who owns the license, your first point of call should be the Performing Rights Society.

Kellogs (or who ever the brand owner of Bran Flakes are), may still have restrictive rights on it though.

I think I'll just find a workaround. Without even going there I can see the pound signs already, and lots of them.
