Finally had a go in a 718...
Discussion
My 987.2 S was in for a service last week and I was loaned a 2.0 Boxster 718 PDK, I was very curious to see how this car would perform and drive.
Having read numerous threads about the turbo flat four v’s the good old six and the amount of arguments it caused...here are my own thoughts.
It’s was absolutely horrendous...I couldn’t believe how rough it was, vibration around 2K rpm no power till 3K rpm my 1.6 petrol turbo Kia has a better spread of power, the noise ( sports exhaust fitted ) it made was just unpleasant and the more it was revved the more harsh it became the polar opposite of a flat six.
Again the threads and arguments on PDK’s are numerous this engine mated to the auto box is not a good match and to be quite truthful it was just a pain to drive as it was changing cogs all over the place I ended up keeping it in manual most of the time to stop the kick down’s.
The car itself was very nice to look at especially with the roof down, lovely interior quality and it was pleasure to use a modern infotainment system for a change.
Getting back in my own car was a joy, a nice sounding “smooth” flat six engine and a manual box to play with...ah the simple pleasures are the best.

my GT3 went in for a factory recall at my OPC (airbag module), and they lent me a very smart dark blue new 718 GTS for the day - i dropped the roof as it was sunny and thought, i'll drive to the office, do three quarters a days work and amble back for 6pm. then i started the engine, and quickly decided to drop the car at Gatwick airport short term and get the train into London. Jesus wept, what the hell, either the engine had no oil in it, or Porsche must be having a laugh with their new flat four. fast, but no joy at all from hearing or feeling and no encouragement to rev it out. maybe they are just lowering our expectations in preparation for an electric future. It’s was absolutely horrendous...

Porsche: LETS REDUCE OUR ENGINES FOR EMISSIONS
Audi and Lambo: *keeps v10's and v12's in their line up* nah mate im good
You need to keep up with the info available. The v12 wont make the euro 7 specs without serious perfomance cuts so basically the Aventador is the last if its kind. Audi and Lambo: *keeps v10's and v12's in their line up* nah mate im good
I also wouldnt get excited about the v10 r8,s longevity as something in the pipeline appearing in around 2/3 years time .

I had a 2.0 flat 4 boxster loan when mine went in for service a couple of weeks ago.
I had also read all the reports on the sound.
And yes im afraid they are true, they sound terrible. Totally agree they sound like a mix of a vw beetle and a subaru. But not good.
Flat 6 only for me in a Porsche.
One thing though, ive always had manual gearboxes, tried a pdk boxster 987.2 some years ago and didn't like it, too jerky,
However the latest version is very good, very smooth with its changes. It did impress.
