Boxter 987 Gear conundrum

Attempting a hill start today. I shifted into 1st gear and then there was no traction/bite. Not in any gear and several attempts failed.
I managed to reverse in neutral on to the verge and wait for the jolly nice AA man to come and promptly shift into 1st gear which engaged. afterwards, I drove perfectly normally, including shifts into 1st.

Any idea whats happening and what I should get checked out?

Gear linkage cables are a known problem. If it's magically fixed itself enough to get gears it could be that one isn't fully seated in its locating clip.
