Importing a classic from Germany/Austria

Does anyone have experience for importing a classic car from these countries?

I’m looking at a couple, one in each, with the idea of buying one and bringing it to the UK.

I guess other than the trailering or driving costs, I’d simply be looking at the import duty on a 35 year old car with a value below £2000.

Are there any other other costs, or problems with registering it from German/Austrian to UK?

You won't pay import duty within EU (for the time being anyway).

Make sure you understand the de-registration process in the country you're exporting it from. Some expect return of plates etc before it leaves the country, and you'll potentially need paperwork to demonstrate that's been done when you come to register it here (and a certificate of conformity, if it needs one). It has been MANY years since I've done this, but I don't recall it being challenging when there used to be DVLA local offices that you rocked up with a pile of paperwork and walked out with a certificate to obtain number plates and a tax disc (assuming you'd MOTd already, if needed)
