My 20 year old E36 318iS Coupé needs a new back box. I want a genuine one as I want to keep the car original. There are various other bits that will need doing too. Can anyone recommend an online supplier of original E36 parts?

Have you tried, tried & tested dealers such as Cotswold BMW?

They’re great to deal with and offer discounts over various forums IIRC

Haven't tried anywhere yet. Just wondering what options are available.

BMW exhausts were made for them by Eberspaecher and Boysen, both very high quality systems. They can be difficult to get though and BMW pretty much insist on sole rights. It's pretty normal for a BMW system to last 15 - 20 years. My own record ius 17 years on two cars, one being a 1993 318iS Coupe.

Mine has lasted 20 years, the only issues being the shell around the back box is now disintegrating and brackets holding the exhaust on have had to be replaced a few times.

I found this site which contains a huge array of spares but some of the prices are eye-watering! https://bmwsupply.co.uk/

My old 250k 330d was still on it’s original exhaust at 18 years old.

Not all aftermarket exhausts are junk. I wouldn't give you sixpence for Walker/Bosal/TiMax or st like that. But 10 years ago I bought an aftermarket back box for an E30 320i, some £35 Italian made thing. It fitted well, sounded nice and lasted six years before it finally rotted out. BMW ones though are mainly stainless with a aluminised outer skin, and weigh a ton.
Secondhand E90 etc exhausts are thus worthless - they aren't old enough yet to have rusted out.

I am surprised you need a new exhaust, mine lasted all of its 19 years. Same clutch too.

Try here. I used to look up the part then ordered from Coopers of reading. Small genuine parts, such as parking brake shoe springs, etc, were surprisingly reasonable.

I think the exhaust is fine, it's just the shell around the back box that's started to disintegrate. I just had to pull the remains of it off as it was in danger of falling off and could have damaged another vehicle if it had done so at speed. I'm still on the original clutch too!

After Eberspächer, IMASAF would be a second choice.
