Foolproof le mans pics?
Discussion
Off to le mans in a few weeks with the SLR and I was hoping you guys could give me a few tips on shutter speeds. Are there speeds that you use for motorsport that always give a perfectly blurred background but nice crisp car? Obviously it depends on the speed of corner and your panning ability. Can anyone suggest good ranges to work in? I don't want to pay for developing of a load of films of rubbish!

What's all that about then????
Seriously, it seems that anything from 1/30 to 1/125 will do, depending on speed of car. It also depends on your position and angle relative to travel, it's a fine art really...

You'll probably want max focal lenght to focus through any fences - so 1/125 - 1/320 should do in most places (as the cars are moving fairly quick )
But the biggest problem is finding a spot without fences.
Something to do - if you either have tickets or can blag access - is to get some night shots of the pits from the grandstand opposite. You'll need a tripod though I guess. Good for blurred mechanics and static cars

The Porche Curves is pretty good, fence wise, as you are stood on a big bank looking down on the cars. Only problem though is that you are a good way back from the track, I'd say a 400mm should be enough though.
Everywhere else is a real pain in the ass, except on the banking after the chicane/Dunlop bridge after the start straight.
I definately think there's a good shot or two to be had from the top of the Ferris Wheel too!
Martin.
