Hi, I'm new here so hope this is in the right place.
I have a 2011 Ford focus 1.6 EcoBoost 150bhp which needs the engine reconditioning. The hardest thing is finding someone that won't scam me, as I've read some bad stories. I'm in East Anglia UK. Obviously willing to travel to the right garage.
I've been chatting with someone at E.C.U solutions in Brentwood essex. Does anyone have any experience with these guys?

What does this even mean, nowadays. In the "good" old days this either meant a lick of paint on a replacement usable used engine for which you paid a serious price for the privilege - or a rebore, new pistons, cam regrind maybe, crank regrind and new bearings, valve seating and sealing, new gaskets and ancillaries all round, for which you paid much more and nowadays might cost as much as your car is worth if not more, and if at all possible.
I've personally had a load of trouble with 'recon' engines. It's a more reliable bet to fit a decent used one.
Mind you I recon'd my old clio engine. I bought a used engine that was the wrong type, stripped all the bits from both units, and build one from the pile of bits on the floor. Worked much better than some of the very expensive jobbies I've bought.

It's worth getting it diagnosed properly first.
I once feared the worst on a Volvo D5 engine that had suddenly become extremely tappy under load, sounding just like bad piston slap.
Further investigation revealed one of the engine mounts to be shagged. I changed it and the noise went away completely.

With only 38k miles, even if the oil had never been changed in it's 8 years I would be surprised if the bottom end has gone, unless it's been running with no oil at all.
As others have suggested, try and get it diagnosed properly before jumping in and rebuilding the engine. It's better to spend time (and money) finding out exactly what is wrong before going with the worst case option.
I've not heard a bad big end for a while, but I didn't think they rattled? More of harder knocking sound?
Diagnose first, then fix what is broken. Don't go down the route of "it could be a ... let's try a new one of them.."
