Ok I’m currently on the ferry to Bilbao and my car has developed a serious clonk over speed bumps and general bumps on the road. It stops under braking. It’s been pouring down with my journey down from Cumbria so just checked wheel nuts and continued. The clonk disappears when braking and there appears to be some play in the wheel but without dumping the contents of my boot and getting the jack out I’m no wiser. Smooth roads nothing. I’m going to try and get it checked out in Bilbao but I know the mechanics are going to poke my eyes out on price.

mk1 RS?

console/ suspension bushings, mine got through them quite quickly, not a massively expensive job.

clonk is a very accurate description of the sound.

Thanks for the quick reply, I think I had uprated ones put in about 100k miles ago. They have deteriorated so fast. What is the worst that could happen if I put on 700ks on smooth motorways?

Had a look in Bilbao in the pouring rain and saw the brake caliper was loose. As I was still driving, took it to Skoda in Santander, absolute jokers, they said it damaged the calliper, if it’s paint knocked of then ok it did, they said the bolt elongated the threaded part and wanted to replace shockers and discs and pads which were done less than 1k ago, it would take over 24hrs to fix and gave me the seriousness of the situation. I walked out, went to a scrappy and replaced the bolt, they didn’t even charge me.

Thanks for all the help.

sorry Mark, forgot to check back.

sounds like a nice easy fix there.

did replacing the bolt fix the noise?

No worries!

Yes perfectly, but only after driving 450 miles to get back, not ideal but just couldnt pay their asking fee. I'm used to driving classics so no brakes is pretty normal.

sounds a bit like when a drop link had gone on my mk 5 golf - I honestly couldn't believe how bad the noise was for something so minor.
