We did our annual trip to the Cold War Jets Day at Bruntingthorpe. It was nice to get up close to the aircraft again and be total anoraks for a bit. The weather started off a bit duff but then get better. The aircraft made good shelters when the rain came down.

Here are some photos for you.

As much as I enjoy the Cold War Jets Day, I find it's always tinged with a bit of sadness about what we used to be able to produce in this country. I know we still produce stuff here, I'm an aerospace engineer, but we don't do complete ones apart from the occasional Hawk or Islander.

Very, very few countries do it. Even a Tornado’s rudder PFCU was more complicated than a whole Hunter airframe. I can only imagine what an F-35’s systems are like.

Yes, it’s a little sad, but thankfully we just don’t need the numbers of military jets now.

It was good. Not so many Lightnings or Buccaneers running as last year but we had the Nimrod & Venom as extra and some excellent model flying displays.

I'm disappointed that I couldn't go, I should have been there supporting the Canberra crew with my RC model of WT333 again, but I just don't have enough time at the moment.

Did my line training on a JP. Spent 5 years on Nimrod but not the MR2. I never realised it but at the time those 5 years would probably be the best in my career in the RAF. As a JT (comparatively, nobody gets rich serving) you were paid a fortune but had little responsibility but had SACs to do all the st jobs.

I don't think he was referring to Strategic Air Command in this instance (great movie, by the way)..

Will likely go in August.

The have clearly shortened the run times, they used to go a lot further down on full grunt at the other end of the runway.

But still a great day out, and you will never get close to a mil jet running full honk!

My apologies.

SAC - Senior Aircraftsman
JT - Junior Technician, no longer a rank really although there is the odd one still left over who weren’t good enough to make cpl but the RAF in there desperation to try and keep aircraft techs in have offered them 22 years service. I know of only one. Replaced with SAC(T) known as a Senior Aircraftsman (Technician) less well trained initially but those who shoes some drive and gumption were rapidly promoted to Cpl

Cpl - Corporal

The Old Buccaneer

Recall one year at Farborpugh an RN one was doing a display and at the finish went along the crowd line at 90 degrees to the horizontal with its bom bay open and FLY NAVY printed in it

Normal practice in the 1970s. I remember a Buccaneer doing the same at the 1976 Greenham Common air show.

I remember Mildenhall in the late 80's i think, in a very short lived time in the ATC, (full of little Hitlers) we had a day at the airshow, it was awesome, sat in EVERYTHING, walked through a C5, sat in an Apache, an A10, an F4, was superb.

Watching the display on the roof of the of the Bedford CF minibus and a Bucc had just finished. F111 was taking off, and as he climbed away the Bucc came right over us at crazy speed, as we were in the car park, no rules then, straight over us to buzz the crowd line. Brilliant.

three of us fell off the roof!

Cold War Jets is a must do and one to be got in soon as I am sure it won;t last forever!!
