Hi,

I am going to call NHS direct probably later but PH has not failed me or others yet ;)

I am not the type to be off work ill but there is something wrong with me and im not sure what!

On Sat while on client visits, about 5pm I started to get a really dry sore throat (a la cold symptoms) and by the end of the evening i was shaking and had a severe headache. Slept sort of through the night and got up feeling disoriented but much better.

Sunday was fine went to work monday feeling totally lethagic, still had a sore throat and like i was a passenger watching myself do the normal work stuff.

I am off work today, still have a sore throat but I still feel REALLY tired even on a full nights sleep and have an aching neck and headache.

Is this serious? I have never felt this physically drained before without feeling catastrophically ill.

Really? I thought flu was just a bad cold! Never had it before!

I've had Flu (proper) and you'd be amazed at how debilitating it is. I no longer use "flu" as my sickies-excuse!

But, I've also had what I belive to be something like "viral meningitus" (could be way wrong though!)... and I felt like I was going to die - in fact, I wanted to!

My flu took nearly two weeks to recover from too!

Ish, generally, flu differs because, you don't normally sneeze, the tired/weakness can last over a week, high temp and headaches are also more flu-ish.

Nope, flu is one on its own. If you've got flu, you'll know about it - if you can stand up, it probably ain't flu!

I had it about 5 years ago, and it puts everything in perspective. My neighbours called an ambulance because they thought I had meningitis (they found me unconscious by the back door because my dogs were running loose), and I lost a stone in 2 weeks. No wonder old people die of it.

I was almost at that stage 2 days ago - could hardly stand up and was shaking uncontrollably but that passed overnight. Still feel utterly knackered though Normally I do karate 4 or 5 times a week so its an odd feeling!

I wouldn't worry too much - all sorts of viruses can do that. And can keep you feeling low for ages. Go to bed, get plenty of fluids, keep warm but don't let the room get stuffy, dose up with paracetamol.

You'll find this is what big girls' blouses refer to as man flu.

Proper flu:
An infection caused by the “flu” (short for “influenza”) virus. The flu is a contagious viral illness that strikes quickly and severely. Signs include high fever, chills, body aches, runny nose, sore throat, and headache.

... as opposed to a slight runny nose used as an excuse to take a day off work, usually with the "flu" victim whining about it on numerous internet forums because their nose is slightly sore from the ultra soft ladies tissue paper.

Had it once where i totally lost 3 days + anther 3 days of moapinfg around recovering , very very nasty

When you get the real thing you can start to understand how it killed about 18m people in the 1918 epidemic

Could be many things.
One possibility is Strep throat which needs antibiotics. Worth treating as the bacteria invade your whole body and can effect your joints and heart.

could be glandular fever. I've had it (proper dose of it not the teenage-version) and also 'real' flu and they're pretty similar.

gh0st,

I had exactly that two weeks ago...exactly the same symptoms. Could hardly keep my eyes open, really sore throat, glands up...fnarr.

I put it down to a virus and that I had Glandular fever a few years ago which comes back in symptoms every now and again.

Better now but only just....gave it to the wife and children too....sorry about that.

I had that and ended up in hospital for 2 weeks. Ended up with hepatitis and some very nasty bacterial infections. Was off work for 2 1/2 months afterwards and not allowed to drink for another 3 months after that!

It was truely unpleasant, and not an experiance I'd like to repeat in a hurry.

Most probably flu, by the sounds of your symptoms. Take some paracetamol and drink lots of chicken soup!! If it doesn't improve after a few days, go to your GP.

I've heard the way doctors tell if it's flu or not is 'if it's flu you can't get to the doctors'.

Like I said it could be a major strep attack in which case you are looking at some pretty pokey antibiotics and 10 days plus off work. Do something quick, it can knacker your heart.
