Camera Van - A64

I was travelling down the A64. I had my Waze on so I could see my exact speed. I know I didn’t go over 77mph. At the last minute I saw a camera van on the overhead bridge. Will I get a ticket? I didn’t go over 77mph and I’m sure I was doing 75 when I saw the camera van.

Twice I've been doing around 77mph to 79mph - on the speedo, not a sat nav system - (quickly scrubbed down to 70 when I spotted the van overhead!) on an A road and on a motorway and I've never received a ticket for it.

Can be all down to luck of being 1mph either side of how strict they're being on the day (2mph over the limit or applying 10% + 2mph rule).

All part of the gamble of driving over the speed limit!

Got done doing 33mph in a 30 by a van - speed awareness course was the case then, not worth it at all anymore, m'way cruise set to 69mph, boring I know but i need my licence.

Was the camera at the bottom of Whitwell? Having done similar to the OP a few Sundays ago, I’ve had the same waiting game.

I am pro police - they do a tough job. But the placement and timing of that camera tests my ability not to swear in front of the children.

77 or 75 is over the limit so you could still get a ticket.

Do not rely on the old 70 +10%.

You can still be fined for 1 mph over (but there's no proof of this )

You're right to say not to rely on it, but it would appear from this article (which I'm sure was posted on this forum the other month) suggests that the tolerances are in place for both mobile and fixed cameras across all police forces.

I got caught by North Yorkshire Police on the A1 in 2017 doing 80mph according to the paperwork and I got a speed awareness course, the FAQ's which came with the paperwork said they don't bother at 79 or less so unless things have changed since I think you will be ok.

Not worth speeding on the A64 as they frequently have 2 camera vans out at a time, I just set cruise control to 70 now and forget about it

Welcome to Yorkshire, home of the camera van. Yorkshire use the 10% + 2mph rule so 78.6mph (yes really) and above on a NSL road are usually caught so you should (hopefully) be fine.

I know the bridge you refer to and its not only sneaky of them but its very hard to see until you're on them as the bridge wall is hiding 50% of the van. Massive cash cow that one and 9 time out of 10 there's one there and he moves to several equally sneaky locations up and down the a64.

Welcome to Yorkshire, home of the camera van. Yorkshire use the 10% + 2mph rule so 78.6mph (yes really) and above on a NSL road are usually caught so you should (hopefully) be fine.

North Yorkshire still work to the old ACPO guidelines so if you were doing 75 (or even 77) in a 70 as you went past the van you'll be fine; rumours of zero tolerance are, for the moment at least, just that!

Hate the things, never in a place where speed actually matters like a housing estate or outside a school. Think the state has gone mad, they might think twice about putting them out especially with lone workers if they can be intimidated enough.

True but from the OP's original comments it seems pretty clear they were aware they were in a 70mph limit (so presumably one of the dual carriageway sections).

Every chance there wasn't, from what I gather Waze is far from guaranteed to give you reliable warnings about the presence of mobile cameras....

When you say Yorkshire, there are 4 forces covering the county. NYP presumably, but are the others the same policy?
