Downsizing from a RRS

Evening all,

Long story short. Mum is now in a care home as her alzheimer's is getting worse. Dad has the house up for sale and is moving into a flat in Cheltenham in a few weeks. He currently has a RRS and has found it is a bit tight in the basement parking to get in and out of it when parked so is thinking of getting something narrower.

He still would like something with an element of 4 wheel drive as he holidays in the Highlands when snow could fall, not full on snow season but close. He has been looking at Merc C class 4matics. I suggested BMW 3 series touring xDrive. They are not that much narrower but should help with getting in and out of the car when parked up.

Struggling to think of any other suggestions at the moment. He wants something premium. He's not a fan of VAG.

Any other ideas??

I would say in the 50k region. Depends how much he gets from the RRS. It's just over a year old so should still have good value in it.

Diesel would be fine, he still does good mileage. I don't think it would matter too much though.

Not an EV though!

Might be a bit obvious but is the new RR evoque not an option? Similar car as now just a smaller package?

He does not like the RR Evoque, already suggested that.

It's also not that much narrower.

I'd suggest looking for a used Alpina XD3 BiTurbo my OH's D3 is fantastic with an amazing ride & the XD3 could be just what your Dad's looking for.

The C43 Estate is a good shout. I suggested a GLC but as soon as you look at them or Macans, SQ5 etc. they are not that much narrower than the RRS.

And less of a change from a RRS to a car.

Depending on budget you should be able to get a fully kitted high spec model that would be little different from the RRS

Good shout. It’s all down to the width. All the SUV style vehicles are not that much narrower than the RRS compared to a car.

Having said that the new 3 series is just as wide as the RRS!

A Volvo XC40? Can be pretty highly spec’d and is narrow(er).

I swapped from an S60 to an A4 as my parking space at my new flat was a bit narrow too. The 7cm made all the difference, doesn’t sound much but it is!

Couple of premiums which are narrower:

Jeep Grand Cherokee is almost 30cm narrower and has a premium look to the exterior. The inside won't be as plush as the RRS but it will be hugely capable off-road / snow.

Amazingly the Porsche Cayenne (good off-road as well) is actually narrower than the Macan. The Cayenne is 28cm narrower whereas the Macan is only 12cm narrower. I didn't expect that.

Jaguar XF Sportbrake AWD is 13cm narrower. I'd advise against the new Ingenium diesels and stick to the petrols.

My old man found the 3/4 series a bit low to be getting into and out of with his joints so moved to a GLA. Might be worth checking he is happy with the seating position coming from an SUV

Both a little elevated for ease of access.

Both look good (IMO) and have decent specs depending on price.

Have to say if the Grand Cherokee is 30cm narrower that would put it right up there for me you should be able to land an Overland or Summit for 10k less than list along with all the trappings (dealer contributions 5 year warranty 3 year service packs 5 years breakdown etc) for a little less once you haggle.
