I've been looking at a few custom bikes following on from the bimble thread and have found some bike that I really love. I'm not questioning the purchase price of these bikes as clearly a an awful lot of work has gone in to them. However, if I bought one am I paying for a unique bike and essentially pissing a load of money up the wall come resale time? Enjoyment of the bike obviously plays a big part but there's a big part of me (100% at last census) that would be a bit gutted to pay 8k for a bike that is worth 3k when I got bored of it. I know all bikes depreciate but are these examples going to dive in a couple of years...

Custom XJR1300/R1 - £8500

Custom T100 - £7500

Both lovely bikes but the XJR looks amazing in my eyes.

You’re always going to limit the market if you customise a bike like that. If that’s what you want then you’ll have to pay for it so it depends on if you value it or not.

Personally I don’t like the majority of bikes done like that so I wouldn’t pay a premium but that just means I’m not the target market.

If it's essentially unique, it'll be worth what you decide to sell it for. It's not like they buyer will be able to point to another sold and say "that sold for 3K".

Obviously if you put 50,000 miles on it, store it outdoors without a cover, never perform any maintenance or cleaning... you're unlikely to get your money back. But if you keep it in much the same state as bought, and you're sensible with your asking price based on miles/condition.. you should get back something that's reasonable.

The only other caveat I'd suggest is that the market will likely be smaller for your bike second hand, as it throws up fun with insurers, warranty/reliability etc. as well as people not wanting "custom", but that usually only extends the time taken to sell, not the price.

Custom bikes are like fully restored cars; let someone else take the big hit in paying for it first and then buy it for a fraction of what they paid for it a few years later.
Either that or build it yourself, it's not exactly difficult...

The only bike you will ever truly add value to by customising or accessorising is a Harley (as long as you use recognised parts and not Chinese tat).

I’d love to build one. I’d never buy one though.

Rather than me do the legwork and post adverts for you to look at go online yourself and have a quick peek.

Pretty much any Harley with decent parts and accessories such as Screamin' Eagle or S&S will be priced at more than an equivalent without.

That's not appreciation though, that's retention of a certain % of the value of the accessories, same as any bike.

What you said was that adding them would increase their value, it does but not to a value in excess of the cost of the bike and accessory combined.

No legwork needed as no bike exists to support your statement.

I have been on track with that yam and it’s excellent. I think with a custom you have to find someone who really wants it. There will be lot of people looking for a boneville so they easily. No one is looking for a bobber/cafe 1300 thing so it’s tougher to find the buyer

You have to buy with your heart not your head - is it worth 8k to you?

My cafe cost me roughly 4-5k to build but I wouldn’t sell it for less than 25k - there is no way it’s worth that as a bike, but it’s my bike and that’s the value to me

A friend of mine has done a few of these, he's a clever lad and and at the moment has knocked up this from I think a Honda FT500

He's also done the obligatory BMW R100 bobber as well as this rather trick TRX850 and an AR50 inspired GPz550!

Im pretty sure in saying while he does ask strong money for them when he decides to sell them, shorty after he has built them usually, the price they actually sell for is way short of what he is asking...

As to value, only you can really decide that but i couldnt pay £8500 for a modded XJR but then I can hardly judge with the amount of money ive put into my 2 strokes...I you like the scene and the bike that much, you've got to have it...

That TRX is great, really like that.

Maybe I should build my own. Pretty happy I've got all the skills although I've not done any mixing and matching of parts from different bikes so maybe the front end swaps can wait.

Fair comment, on the other hand, it's of no consequence to me if a bunch of 'never mets' on the internet don't like me, at least I don't talk out of my arse !!!!

Au contraire; I am quite sure that you, plus any other reasonable person reading what I wrote, knew exactly what I meant.

Are you really as thick as this or just pretending ? I hope its the latter ....

This is your statement, its quite clear, ands also quite clearly a load of ste so get back in your box you silly little mug.

The only bike you will ever truly add value to by customising or accessorising is a Harley (as long as you use recognised parts and not Chinese tat)

You reduced this to an antagonistic exchange by trying to be clever, which you quite obviously aren't.

I gave you an out, you were too thick to take it apparently, enjoy the red rage and send us pics of you throwing your keyboard round the room.

As for being a dhead, I can do that, but in this instance wasn't until you chose to be a donkey about it.

Have a great weekend my little snowflake.

PS, apologies to the grown ups for the tangent this has gone on.

Back on topic, love the blue / blue framed one, some of the stuff created is fantastic although not a huge fan of 'the scene' and know many of these sell for a lot less than they cost to build ....
