Starter motor life
Discussion
Just fixed my broken steering wheel ribbon, sorted the door buttons (dirty connectors), found the bonnet hinges were loose so sorted that, now the starter has packed up again. Just spins and wont engage.
This was new in July 2017 and the car was off the road for months after that having the engine rebuilt. It replaced another new one fitted in 2014.
These new starters aren't lasting long
I was supposed to be out in it on Sunday.

Is it easy to get the starter out from below? I don't want to rip bits off the engine really. I have lots of pipes and cables wrapped in heatshield along the back of the engine.
The cars booked into Sr8six on 21st for diff bushes etc. I might have to leave it to them as I've limited time now.
A real pain. It was working fine all spa weekend and just decided not to work today.

The last owner of my Cerbera changed the starter clutch in 2017.
I don't know how big a job it is but the part from Racetech (part no RD600K) was £70 delivered. Seems to still be the same:

I had two starter motors fail on mine and I got frustrated paying for new ones/having them fitted. So I ordered that part you've linked and fitted it myself. It wasn't a massive job to do but It was just frustrating at times, but I'm not that handy with a spanner though. WOSP starters seem to be the best but still need changing every 2-3 years, it seems the solenoid goes one mine over that time which by the sound of yours Dave is the same fault.
I now have a spare rebuilt one in the garage and one on the car which when that goes belly up gets sent to WOSP to be rebuilt.
Many different makes tried over the last 10 years or so and WOSP Definitely the best.

The original was on the car for 15 years but was running a little slow, so whilst doing the body off I thought it a great time to replace it. They should last longer than 2 years, or in this case, only a years use. I now have a spare rebuilt one in the garage and one on the car which when that goes belly up gets sent to WOSP to be rebuilt.

I might have a look today to see if I can lift it enough to see whats going on with it.

It is normally the solenoid that goes wrong, on one the sprag clutch was the issue.I might have a look today to see if I can lift it enough to see whats going on with it.
The slow running sounds like the brushes worn or dirty contacts in the solenoid.
Your current issue sounds like the solenoid and a probable short inside with the low current 12v feed shorting to the motor windings and spinning the motor I have had two fail with these symptoms.

I'm going to start trying to get at it today, see how little I can take off, maybe not to remove it but just try to check it / move the engagement

More like starter is engaging and spinning really fast but not turning the engine???????????????????????????????I'm going to start trying to get at it today, see how little I can take off, maybe not to remove it but just try to check it / move the engagement
Had a look today, using this thread.

I've some pipework needs moving, the rear coil sits on a plate so that will have to come off, the big fuse has a broken cover so is completely exposed.
It's booked into str8six on 21st so they can sort it all whilst sorting out everything else bodged or not done that I thought I'd paid for.

That frightened mehttps://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
Might be worth a look, I changed the solenoid but was still hit and miss as to whether it would engage and turn the engine. I noted that the flywheel teeth seemed to be a lot cleaner on the edge nearest the starter. After a few failed attempts I changed the spacer that is supplied with the solenoid that fits between the solenoid and the starter body. When the thicker of the two was fitted it would send the aperture out a lot further engaging with the flywheel.

You never know
Cheers

I think I need the shim mod. Mine fails to engage about 20% of the time (100% when people are watching!). It usually goes on the 2nd or 3rd attempt, although I had to rock the car in gear to rotate the flywheel the other day. I get the impression the starter teeth need moving further out.
