Hi all,

First post - so be gentle with me biggrin

Background: I've an A6 Avant (estate) S-Line Auto, 65 plate. Bought it a year old, ran it for 2.5 years now. Bought an estate because seemed better value but same space as SUV style car (wife, 2 kids, dog ... need the space). However ... the OH doesn't like it, and there are a few non-mechanical niggles that do frustrate me, like how bluetooth never connects unless I go through many menus. First world problems, I know!

Anyway ... was considering the same approach again but going the SUV style this time. So - buy a car 1 year old, still decent warranty left but someone else took the year 1 depreciation.

But ... I'm looking at Skoda Kodiaq (Sportline) and I can buy one new via a broker for the same price as a 1 year old car with £10k miles on the clock from dealer. Same seems to be true of Seat Tarraco Xcellence Lux.

Is that normal? Or just those cars? Or - if I approach the dealers and show them what I can get via broker new are the likely to knock a few thousand off the used price to at least make me consider 2nd hand?

Side note: For around £31k: Kodiaq / Tarraco new, or 18 month old F-Pace or XC60?

Typically used cars are priced to the market so little, if any margin to play with - I certainly wouldn't think you can get £1-2 k off a used car from a franchised dealer unless it is over-priced against similar cars (sometimes a car as a demo etc is advertised but we don't "need" it to go yet so don't price it as such).
Generally a used car you will find has some options on it so you are not always comparing like for like (e.g. the used car you are looking at may have £4k of options on it which changes the desirability vs a new "base" car) - but ultimately if you are happy with the spec you can get via a broker then go for it. I'd always try and get a local dealer to match what you can get - sometimes we can, sometimes not, but at least it is easier to collect / should any issues arise to get it looked at... May also be Deposit contributions if you are considering finance (also check the broker price you are looking at is including any finance allowances too).

Yup, pretty typical for mainstream cars. I help quite a few friends with car purchases and they all come pre conditioned with the opinion a lightly used one is the way forward. They nearly all end up with a new car for less money than the used ones.

Absolutely. Go for new. With any Manufacturer contribution by taking finance (and paying it off straight away) or possibly better interest rates.
Often 6 month to 12 month old cars are Dealer spec'd so have lots of extras that you may not need (note need rather than want!).
I ended up with 2 new cars last year rather than my usual 1 to 2 year old ones as it was in the long run cheaper to do so. Yes, one of them is pretty vanilla, and I could have easily added another £5k of extras, but I have everything I need (plus a little of what I want 😊).

I ended up buying a new M140 because the discounts were so strong, they weren’t really any more expensive than a used car and far cheaper when using BMW finance.

If you get the option to add a few options etc, I’d go new if there’s nothing in it. At least that way you’ll get the car that you actually want.

Thank you for the messages ... looks like new is the way to go.

Now I just need to read all the threads about paying off dealer finance early, and how to do it while keeping any additional extras like free servicing or the like smile

What's availablity of those like? They're built in Europe whereas the Tiguan version, Allspace, is built in Mexico, but Allsapce is on 10 months leadtime.

New being cheaper does seem to be a VAG thing though - we needed wife's Tiguan quickly so I looked at nearly and just as you said, we had to go back to cars 12mths before they were cheaper - and they were pre a light facelift and didn't have sat nav as standard. I also found dealers not in the slightest interested in negotiating on used - the Inchcape group had 100 such cars but it was talking (where the garage bothered answering) to a brick wall. These were £25-30K. We got a new one, in colour and spec we wanted, delivered in 8 days for £24K.

I asked the salesman why this happens and he told me some people come in set in their minds they want used. Generall they're different salespeople so the used guy isn't going to point out they'd be better off buying new.

Having said that, there might be "savings" to be made on top spec models, especially if heavy with options. There's a thread on the mk2 Tiguan forum at the moment where someone bought a loaded 4 mth old ex-demo Tiguan R-Line that listed at £43K and he paid £29K. He's moaning that at 18mths old he's being offered £21.5K for it.

Long build time on some models can inflate nearly new prices & if memory serves correct VAG are at about annual production shut down at the moment (?). Add production shut down onto a model that's already got an extended build time & many people simply will not wait, inflating fresh used prices.

Seat dealer near me is quoting 12 weeks for factor order for Tarraco, although they have some available at other branches or arriving into the UK next week - so I could have these within a week. Pretty sure he said the were made in Portugal, but that doesn't sound right?

Skoda Kodiaq Sportline - last I spoke to them was 16 weeks. I've heard that they have a factory 2 week shutdown in the summer, and then when they start up again it would be the MY20 model (not totally 100% on the difference between MY19 and MY20 - but you'd think there would be minor improvements?!)

I'm edging towards buying new ... but now the problem is that I prefer the Kodiaq sportline from the outside, but the standard kit on the Tarraco xcellence lux is better (all round parking sensors with overhead view, digital dash as standard, leather seats).

Did exactly the same thing when I bought my Golf R in 2016.

I'm sure I read it's built in Wolfsburg, home of VW. Which must ps off all the VW loyalists having to have a Mexican built Allspace.

The only thing I'd say about SEAT is the dealers seem univerally crap - even compared to VW. Daughter had an Ibiza years ago and recently bought an Ateca - from different dealers but both poor, and it comes up on the forums all the time. OTOH people seem to love Skoda dealers.
