McLaren Dilemma
Discussion
So, I have the following dilemma and wondered people's thoughts;
A 2yr old 570s in the exact spec/colour etc I was looking for (ha sonly done a few thousand miles) on for circa £119k
A brand new 570GT again with a great spec (I slightly prefer the looks of the rear hatch on the GT, otherwise, obviously, the cars are virtually identical looking). This is being offered to me for about £157k. I am not overly fussed about the slight difference in spring rates etc between the 2 cars, car will be used on the roads at weekends and the occasional European road trip and jaunt down to the west country.
Here's the curve ball though, looking at a deposit of about £35k on the S and £45k on the GT the monthly's actually come out marginally less on the GT, i.e. the cost to me is going to be almost exactly the same to get in to and own both cars (bar a bit more deposit on the GT).
I really like both cars and would be very happy with either, the GT just shades it on looks but is marginal. My main concern is depreciation, I know I'm going to lose money on a car and can accept that but I would ideally like to come away with some money at the end of the term (or sooner if I want to change/move on) as not putting in an insignificant deposit.
What are peoples thoughts, will the newer car depreciate more because it's new and will the 2nd hand S hold it's value a little better if it's suffered most of it's depreciation already..? Or will the GT depreciate less over 2 years than the S if that will then be a 4yr old car... I am struggling to decide and change my mind every 5 mins at the moment as which is best one to go for so any thoughts, opinions, advice etc gratefully received. Insurance is roughly the same on both, the GT will need PPF so circa +£3k too.
Will be my first foray in to McLaren ownership, coming out of an Aston V12 Vantage. I had a test drive last week in the 570S and was absolutely blown away by the performance, handling, driving feel etc - I was hooked within about 100yards of the dealership on the test drive!
Thanks in advance!

A 2017 car with low miles should be around the £114k so you could negotiate that down a bit. It's still going to depreciate but I believe it will be a lot slower than the GT. Don't forget there's a new model just announced so possibly the 570GT will be looked upon as the previous rather than current so this will put pressure on value. Smaller market for the GT too so prices not so strong.
I have an S but currently in a loaner GT, prefer the looks of this but the setup and engine map of the S.
Nice to have a brand new car vs used but at a much higher cost so you takes your choice.
Good luck which ever you choose, there both sublime to drive.

Call more dealers, I've seen way better deals than 157k for a new GT. Was offered a new one last week at under 140k!!
This There is a thread on here where a chap has just bought a new 570s for "a tad over 130k",
suggesting "they had a few pre-registered cars with delivery miles on for just over £130K. A bit of negotiation after a test drive and I picked up my 19 plate 4 days later!!"

If you are on a three year lease do you need to factor in a couple of years warranty ie ten grand (approx) on the S which then makes it cost the same overall as new GT (perhaps....)
Where do these £10k for 2 years warranty figures you post come from?Have you ever called a McLaren aftersales manager for the actual cost? If you had before posting you would know your a good bit off the mark.

Even the superseries is around £3800 for year 4 warranty...sports series considerably cheaper.
If buying the 2 year old one haggle hard and try everything to get them to throw in an extra years warranty.
If buying new, as previous posts, you will get a far better deal elsewhere.
Both are fantastic, both will lose money. Both will make you feel a million bucks just looking at it in your driveway, never mind driving it...
Go for one before the doomongers make you change your mind...

Ha, totally agree. I know I'm going to lose money and both will depreciate and have made my peace with that, but equally it will take away a bit of the enjoyment if I know the new one loses £25k in it's first year for example and the S may lose £10k... The S will have a full years warranty on it and come serviced etc, will see if I can get them to chuck a 2nd years warranty on. Have you ever called a McLaren aftersales manager for the actual cost? Totally agree those saying to haggle on price for both and am confident I can get them to knock money off on both, but is more about which is going to depreciate more anyway.
r.e. keeping the Aston - I love it and that engine/noise is pretty much unbeatable, but as a drivers car, it's a 7/10's car, you cannot drive it hard and throw it about. The McLaren is in a whole different league when it comes to driving etc, plus have had the Aston almost 3 years now and fancy a change...
Surely the newer car will depreciate more in absolute numbers.
BTW, still have my V12 Vantage. Don’t drive it much. It’s ended up being a sort of a baseline of how much better of a performance car the Mac is, while still reminding me of how nice an engine can sound. And to keep my manual rev matched downshift skills from getting too rusty.

I know exactly where you are coming from...
I'm not that long into 3.5yr old 650spider ownership and have been offered a ridiculous deal chopping in against a 2018 720s...
I was very, very tempted but the higher price definitely meant more depreciation. I know a wee bit of man maths application would of made it work but i love spiders and it would of been another compromise to me, so i ultimately decided to keep the model i really wanted rather than being dazzled by newer and different model.
The warranties are bulletproof, so the 'investment' yearly cost of a warranty shall be well cheaper than the yearly depreciation on a new car.
I would advise go for the car that is exactly the spec that you want...if its older and cheaper its a bonus...if its brand new and you get a great deal...happy days.
Your talking about wayyy too much money to say after you bought it 'i wish it had xxx'.
I held out for ages as i specifically wanted volcano orange, superlight alloys, all the exterior carbon bits, alcantara, lift, upraded sound, blah blah blah and then the spot on car appeared...jackpot.

Of the two, as a pure comparison I would say since the launch of the new GT, the 570gt will become less desirable over the next year or so, meaning that there will be little difference between the 570s and the 570gt on the future used car markets IMHO. The real answer is for you to look across the full dealer network and find a pre-registered s in the spec you want with the same dealer support as they are offering you on that GT. It's a buyers market.

Yes, similar scenario I've had, was all set on the S and found the exact spec I was looking for, was comfortable with the price etc and then they threw the curve ball of the new GT for almost exactly the same cost in terms of deposit and monthly's. So in terms of my man maths, it would really have to come down to depreciation. Then you start getting seduced by it being a brand new car etc. I do marginally prefer the looks of the GT with the hatch window, but that is all. I know you don't really pay the sticker price, but I also don't think I can get my head around spending that much on a new car when I was looking around the 110-120 mark initially.
I think I am going to go for the S, I think/hope it will depreciate a little less than a new GT, it's the exact spec I was looking for for a while and psychologically I am more comfortable with the price.
Thanks for all the comments/thoughts!
I would strongly advise ringing dealers and get hustling 157k is crazy for what I have seen on a couple of cars. You have 57k to loose over a couple of years on it too.
I think prices on Maccas will firm a bit as the buying public get's more confident with them but currently it's firmly a buyers market. Compared to the experience of trying to buy a Porsche the dealers are all super keen to get sales.

Is Storm Grey, Bowers & Wilkins, Carbon interior pack, security pack, full Alcantara and leather. Was the exact spec I’d been looking for, only done 2k miles. Has come from McLaren Ascot who I have to say have been absolutely brilliant. They sold the car to the previous owner and know the car and have looked after it for him so should be no issues.
Will get signed up to the McLaren owners Club too. Literally cannot wait and am still pinching myself!
