Is Vanquish pricing really as mileage-sensitive as it seems? Although I'm really a Porsche guy, I'm having unclean thoughts about a Vanquish. Essentially the question is: what's wrong with this car: https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/... ?

It's easily the cheapest S I've seen at retail, and is £10k cheaper than an SDP that Nicholas Mee has on sale, which in turn is £20k more than any number of non-SDP, non-S cars of similar vintage. The Mee car has only 17k miles and is a rather lovely colour, but surely 40k can't count as high mileage for this age of car, can it?

I don't know the Aston market - are these asking prices just guidelines expecting bids; are the cars really that mileage-sensitive; are there magic specs or options that drive pricing?

Very mileage sensitive. 40k is a LOT of miles, but that's because so many have way, way less. Buyers' have lots of low mileage examples to choose from. One real advantage of buying a high miler is you don't take much value out by driving several thousand miles per year.

2.6k / year is not a lot so long as it's been looked after. I'm sure it's brought more joy than a garage princess.

Have you considered that Nicholas Mee might be over-charging for their car? wink

In the same way that you should always think long and hard before buying anything “classic” from AM Works (love them for everything else though!). One or two dealerships do like to premium price and hope the buyers aren’t the type to shop around

Hell, yes - in fact I assumed so, but I don't know by how much. As I say, I don't know the market.

Thinking of the Mee car: assuming, say, a 10k premium for SDP, I'd guess they have £25k across it - i.e. they bought it for £70k. Does that sounds reasonable?

That £25k needs to cover servicing and prep, stock financing, warranty, margin and VAT. I'd guess they want to clear £7.5k on the deal, so £10k with VAT. Assuming they have to have £5k of costs, that leaves £10k of negotiating room. By implication it's an £85k car elsewhere.

I suppose it all depends on how quickly these cars turn around, and whether they are offloading the warranty or backing it themselves. I assume the premium pricing supports some premium reputation protection if the car goes badly wrong in the warranty period, so maybe they need/want more meat in it than I'm suggesting.

It may also be on SoR with the pricing dictated by the owner

I have noted that car - an early S.

Looks fairly presentable and excellent value, BUT I would require a full PPI if I was considering buying it, including taking the undertrays off to check the underside condition which these hide including front subframe corrosion.

Brake fluid reservoir look very tired, so needs replacement, as engine heat make the plastic brittle.

If all checks out, then looks like a good buy.

I have a 40k miles standard Vanquish - yes a little on the high side compared to some, but condition wise, mechanical & cosmetic, it is very, very good and better than many with a quarter of that mileage.

I think a well sorted Mk1 Vanquish is a magnificent GT and one of the best looking cars ever made.

Thanks. Who is the go-to person for AM PPI, in your opinion?

I would suggest http://v12vanquish.com/ for Bucks

Happy show you round my Vanquish if interested and take you out - I'm in Surrey, just off the A3 out of London.

Thank you, that's very kind. I'm looking at a Porsche in Paris tomorrow, but if that doesn't come off, I'll drop you a PM.

I think I've put a deposit on the car you are talking about. It's the realisation of a dream I've had for around 12 years.

It is sort of on SOR - the dealer stores a lot of cars for the owner, who has also recently sold a Pagoda SL and a DBS too. It does seem to me that the mileage has taken precedence over the fact that it's an S but as I intend to drive it, I'm happy for someone else to take the knock and me to benefit from the refinements of a later car.
The pictures don't do it justice. It is cheap because it needs some trim pieces replaced (around £5k new) and there are three small spots of corrosion which need addressing (£1.5-3k est) - not bad for a 14 year old car (after some of the stories I've heard about Astons) but not good on a car at this price point.
I gave the option of having the car brought up to standard for the asking price or for the price to be reduced accordingly. We reached an agreement with me taking the car MOT'd but as is.

BTW, the brake fluid reservoir is dirty (as is most of the engine bay) but a new one is only £60 so won't break the bank.

eta: Off to find my 80's tapes now as it has a tape player. biggrin I think they're in the loft somewhere.

Have you had the undertrays off and the front sub-frame inspected. I've seen a first generation Vanquish that looked beautiful but on further inspection the AML price to make good was something like £12,000. You should be able to find details of that on here, there are few threads.

Alternatively, you already knew that, in which case, as you were...

ARAF have you checked out the Vanquish section on the AMOC site?
Storage of the car can be far more important than its milage. There is a story on here or on the AMOC site about a very low milage Vanquish that lived in Dubai. It was brought out and washed once a week.

The guy who bought it had to renew the front sub frame because of that weekly wash and just being put back in the garage. All the water sat on the engine tray and rotted the subframe. I'm sure the milage was only about 10k.

If its been kept in a dehumidified garage I'd be happy.

Good to hear - great price.

If you need bits, let me know, as many parts can be obtained far more cheaply than from AM.

Sign up for AMOC, as Vanquish forum guys are very helpful and will potentially save to £££££s.

Great cars!

All the best,

Mark

I'm particularly interested in Vanquish prices (volante) 2015 and newer. They now appear to be about 50-55% below list when new.
I am thinking of taking the plunge and would be interested to hear where you guys think the bottom is? I would hope they are never going to fall below £70k

What do you think?

the non-S Volante was built in low numbers and is in relatively short supply. Like the Coupe it is now 2-3 years past its final build. Any top condition, FSH, low mileage Vanquish should hopefully IMHO drop to no more than 35% of its list price before it recovers. I've used this stat to buy Astons before. Others may disagree of course!!!
