Please, help me out!

My other half has had a company car for the last 10 years, however, a new job starting July 1st and a change in circumstance means her new role will be home-based for the vast majority of the time.

This means that she'll soon be needing a new daily-use car as her new role doesn't necessitate the need for a company car or a car allowance.

The plan is for her to find something around the £5k mark. We're needing this to be 3 years-or-so of relatively cheap motoring for her whilst we pay for an extension on the house and a new kitchen. Somewhere around the 3-year mark, we'll look to trade up for something a little better and more recent - maybe.

She'll be doing around 8k miles per year. It needs to be 5 doors, cheap to run and maintain and be able to fit 2 kids in the back along with car seats and everything else that kids come with!

She likes the idea of a small SUV but it doesn't necessarily have to be. Hatchback or saloon would also be suitable. Something solid and reliable is most important and the likely cost of her motoring over the 3-years-or-so.

What would you be looking for that meets these criteria?!
