991 First Drive
Discussion
10 years ago I had a 997 C2S for about a year, loved it but then went through a variety of other metal as i caught the track day bug, Lotus Exige Cup 260 and V6 Cup / 211 / Caterham R300 / F430 (didn't track that one!) but now fancy a bit of Pork in my life again as a 'sensible' toy - something I can have some fun with but also commute and do long distance Euro hoons.
Thought I would try a 2012 991 that a pal has in stock, C2S pdk. Fully loaded with just about every option ticked. Just didn't get on with it. Lifeless steering, felt a bit big and bloated, lacking in torque. I'm not a big fan of two pedals in a Porsche but apparently the pdk is 'must have' as the 7 speed manual has bizarre ratios? Sport was OK (ish) but Sport Plus kept giving me random down-changes. Blatted up and down the stretch of quiet road with some decent twisties but felt like you really had to be on it to 'connect' with the car. At anything underneath warp speed it felt dull and lifeless. The one option area it was lacking on was the sounds, had 'Sound Package Plus' but i thought it sounded awful. I think you could have a Bose option on the 991 or was it Burmeister?
I liked the look of the thing, felt built well, certainly more practical than my old 997 in terms of cabin space etc but I walked away thinking if that wasn't ever to be in my life I wouldn't miss it. Certainly not keen enough to sink 60K into it.
So what am I missing? Maybe didn't spend enough time with it to get under its skin? Should I have a go in the manual?

It took me a while to bond with my c2s but I did and like it a lot. Maybe it just isn’t for you but I would say that it took me a while before it clicked.
Also I dont think the 3.8 lacks torque for a n/a motor - it’s pretty flexible. Power wise it doesn’t really start to shift until around 5k rpm though. It’s a lovely thing well built with a great engine.
It is better when you are moving a bit but if you want a rawer 911 experience you either need to spend more or start digging a bit further back into porks back catalogue. Cayman gt4 might be worth a look?

Try a GT4 you will need to spend high £70k's for a nice one and you will only have 2 seats but plenty of luggage space. It should sort most of the issues you mention above.Thought I would try a 2012 991 that a pal has in stock, C2S pdk. Fully loaded with just about every option ticked. Just didn't get on with it.
