Hi all, has anyone signed up to a beer subscription service? How do you find it? Interested to hear people's thoughts on this.

I am reluctant to name in case it is viewed as advertising but so far so good for me!

I've been tempted before but head has ruled heart as they often work out around £3 a bottle which is a lot. What offer have you got?

I was gifted a subscription to honestbrew.

I liked it, but it was pretty expensive!

And i must say, once you've drunk a lot of the craft beers, the only thing that really differentiates the beers is how fancy the label is and how catchy the name is...

I did BeerBods for a while. Pretty decent, but I never bothered with the "9pm on Thursday" social media experience bit. Packed it in because I'm not a big fan of milds and porters, and you see a lot more of those in the winter. Worth having a box or two though.

Personally I'd choose a brewery rather than a distributor. Honestbrew and their like have a place but I found the selection to be lacking and almost too 'safe' - too much IPA.

I tried the Brewdog one for a couple of months but found it had too many very average beers.

I'm now four months into the Northern Monk Patron's Society subscription (it's £36 for 9 beers per month, or £30 if you pretend it isn't £6 for delivery). I am very impressed. Follow their webshop on insta/ twitter for notifications about joining as they only seem to allow new subscribers periodically.

I tried Beer52 for a few months, some of the beers were bloody awful.

Turns out I’m not that into ales as I thought I was.

I’ll stick with my blondes from now on

I thought beer52 was pretty decent, nicely packaged with the mag and snack. I got a bit jaded with it when I learned that many of these hipster breweries are just people who create a brand and get the product contract brewed. Didn’t sit well with me at the prices charged.

That's really poor, do you have an example?

I tried Beer52 for a few months. Turns out I don't drink that much at home and ended up with several boxes to get through, so cancelled.

When I've caught up I've seen Flavourly have promo's like 20 beers and two glasses for £20 inc delivery.

It's not as bad as it sounds. A lot of brewers start out using other breweries equipment. Northern Monk started this way at Hambleton’s Ales, Yeastie boys contract brewed at Brewdog, and Mikkeller took years to build their own brewery.

Ok, thought you meant someone was buying a load of old speckled hen and putting a fancy label on it!

Clearly you haven't drunk a lot of craft beers then. There is massive difference between many beers of the same style. There is also lots of different types of beer.

Not yet.

Ten crafts beers (and a snack) for a tenner doesn't appeal either.

Can't help but think it'll be some random lower ABV% stuff which doesn't really sell? Plus a bag of peanuts?

Done Beer52 with a free trial. Went to cancel but the offer I used had also applied credit to my account so I did one more. Worked out 15 quid for 16 beers with postage.

Yeah I did Beer52 too, cancelled it. Not that there is much wrong with it, the beers were interesting, packaged well, the magazine and snack were nice touches. But I didn't feel like it was great value for money.

Likewise. Don’t think I had one beer from them that I would look to buy again.

Bloody annoying when you try to cancel too ...

Another former Beer52 subscriber.

I thought it declined massively. When I started they used to send interesting beers from interesting breweries. Over time the quality dropped and it was more and more of their own beers (which were one offs, so if you liked them you'd never be able to get them again) and they were pretty average.

A friend has cancelled with BeerHawk, as they found they often got fairly bog standard beers that they could pick up in the supermarket for cheaper and that was quote frequently near the expiration date.

If you want a subscription style box, I think you're better off going to a local bottle shop (if you're lucky enough to have one near you) and seeing what they can do -am sure they'd be happy to help as most in my experience are run by enthusiasts. Give them your budget and tell them what you like and they'll do the rest. May mean you have to collect rather than getting it delivered. Although I know if you speak directly to https://hoptimism.co.uk they will create boxes for you. But personally I prefer to support a local business and have some good shops near me so it's not a hardship - plus I get to sample a few beers when I'm picking the box up! drink

Not a subscription, but Beerwulf aren’t bad value and if you order before 4pm, you can get next day delivery. If you order 16 bottles/cans, delivery is FOC.There’s a decent enough range to go at.

Another Beer52 subscriber done about a year but keep forgetting to cancel.

The beer is average at best. The brewery near me told me the prices beer52 pay per can/bottle to the brewery and there’s no way you can get good beer for that price. Breweries are either making poor beer to meet the cost or taking the hit to gain exposure.

As has already been mentioned far better to find a local shop to spend £20/30 a month in or tour your local breweries.

Most supermarkets now have an offering of beers. There is some good ones, but again I am sure some are made to a price point.
