Hi,

My 7 Series E65 2007 reg has developed the most annoying thing on earth, the airbag and seat belt light has come on due to the faulty Airbag ECU with Gateway Module Part Number 65 77 9 149 934. My garage has reset the module a couple of times to no avail, they have also replaced a few cables to the battery that were coming up in the diagnostics and BMW said this replacement of cables can clear the fault, but it didn't.

I have been on to a number of companies via Ebay and off the web who reset these modules and all have said, no thanks we can't get this particular module to run on their rigs and as it's a Airbag module the best bet is replacement with a new part... £690 plus VAT from BMW, plus fitting which isn't straightforward. I have searched high and low and now I am turning to you, good good people for some advice. Because this is my last chance Obi Wan...

Any and all advice gratefully received.

Ciaran

I’ve not worked on the BMW before, but when the garage read fault codes on your car, I presume it’s not indicating individual faults ? Like a crash sensor, seatbelt sensor, individual airbag, seat position sensor, etc...

The fault code is that the actual module is knackered, or there’s no code at all ?

Hi,

There is no single code as you say for seat belts for example. More that the whole module is knackered.

I also can't find anywhere, in the world, that sells these units reconditioned or new, aside from BMW. So I am staring the prospect of a £1,000 bill for a replacement.

Cheers,

Ciaran

Do you know how they are interrogating the system, i.e. what system they're using?
On the part numbers, where did you get 65779149934? From the unit itself, or from the web? The original part was 65772298857, but this was superseded by 65779149934. The older part may be what you have, and may be more plentiful secondhand.
Hope this helps.

Hi,

I know that they didn't get the actual part out as its hard to do, so they rang BMW and got the part number. I am not sure on the reader they use but they did say it was the same as the one that BMW use, so has more information was available.

Do you think it's worth getting them to remove the actual part to confirm the number? I suppose I would then know what to look for and if there are used versions online to purchase.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated!

If you use INPA to do the reading, it will read the gateway part number - as long as the unit isn't bricked. That's where I'd start before removal.

Personal opinion here.... But I’d be concerned that they’re replacing wires, then diagnosing a faulty module. It’s a weird fault finding route.

Have they got comms (can talk) to the module ?

Without the fault codes it's hard to tell but the most common fault is the passenger occupancy sensor mat, see here https://www.youcanic.com/wiki/bmw-airbag-light-pro...

There ways to fudge it but they are not ideal. I would start with making sure everything is connected under the seat as it should be (they are more able to come loose than they should be in that position)

Assuming the workshop have done the diagnostics correctly (and that's quite a big IF), why not just fit a used unit?

Hi,

So I have been told that the parts need to match the original completely to have a chance of being able to 'pair' the part with the chassis number.

I have failed to find anywhere on the web that has the same part number for sale.

I'll repeat what I said above; BMW superseded the original part number with the one the dealership gave you. Both parts are compatible, but of course BMW will only sell you the newer one. I'm still curious about which one you actually have.
Where abouts are you; I'll help with diagnostics if I can.

Hi,

I'm in Kent, just near Maidstone.

I'm thinking about getting the garage to remove the part, so at least i know what the part number is.

I'm in Hertfordshire if you fancy a spin around the M25. Not that anyone ever fancies such a trip, but the offer is there.

As you can see, the BMW part number on that module is 65779115360 (often just written 9115360). BMW superseded this with 65779130203 - so those are the 2 part numbers you're looking for here.
There are a few (allegedly good) modules on Ebay of either part number. Personally I'm always a fan of the newer part numbers, as BMW either changed suppliers or the part for good reason at some stage.
If you're going to buy on Ebay, either go cheap so you don't lose too much money, or go expensive & buy from someone who will take it back if it's not working.

Genius! I couldn't understand why there was nowhere in the globe with this part! Right I'm off to Ebay to ponder. Thanks again for all the advice.

Hi,

I fitted a used SGM to a customers E65 last week. It’s usually an internal fault with a capacitor. It will need coded to change the chassis number but an autel unit can do this. He supplied the unit, I think he paid £60.

You probably already know this, but don’t get handling the airbag ecu, whilst it’s powered by the car.

If it’s got a rollover sensor in it, you’ll get one hell of a surprise smile

Disaster! The unit I brought off eBay the garage cannot wipe it to then recode to my car. Has anyone got advice on what I can do? Can I send the unit somewhere to be wiped? The car is stuck at the garage in Maidstone as the issue means it hasn’t passed the MOT. Any advice most welcome.

You have to write your chassis number (VIN) to this new module, then erase the codes. That was the previous reference to Autel; that's one way of writing it, but using Tool32 is another.
