Cayman 981 connectivity and PCM
Discussion
Hi guys
Boring one I’m sure sorry, considering swapping the BM diesel for an early 981 Cayman as a daily, but wondered what the connectivity etc is like? I’ve a 987 Spyder and can connect blue tooth phone but music is via usb/aux. So... the 981 2012-2014:
Can you play music from an iPhone without wires?
Does the sat nav have traffic on it that’s any good (understand it may not be google levels of detail)
Presuming there is nothing like apple car play in this model/age
Anything that annoys as a daily that something like a new golf would have as standard?

PCM 3.1 is good but not great.
I have 2019 maps and RTTI (real time traffic infomation) enabled on mine, I also have "online services" that let you stream directly to the headunit stuff like DAB etc.
music via bluetooth works also on mine (Android though not iphone).
The only way to get carplay on PCM3.1 is to open the PCM up and install a £500 motherboard in it that then enables carplay if you hold the nav button. Doing so will invalidate any warranty though.

Thanks AJB, food for thought. I know updating the software to new maps or latest is an expensive service option so not ideal.
Interesting iPhone still needs connecting via wires, it’ll be better than my aux cable in the BM but it’s nice when you just get in, things connect and you can play music easily without fiddling.
Currently use google maps for traffic and sat nav, having the phone in a cradle isn’t what I’m aiming for.
Thanks again, I’m sure once driven it’ll make up for any dated tech.

My iPhone works fine via Bluetooth for music.
You can also upload songs to the internal jukebox which is always available - think it is 20GB.
The process is tedious, upload from a USB stick but if you switch the car off it restarts - from the beginning! And it takes hours.
I use a USB stick with all my music, works fine but takes a few seconds to initialise after starting the car before you can select music ( carries on playing the last selection until ready ).
Traffic is via RDS on mine so not as good as live but still works-ish.
