My old cheese grater has served me well for more than a decade, so hopefully the new one will work for another 10 years, should do for the price, anyone want to buy a kidney?

Stunning machines if you need a very high-end workstation. Shame there is nothing for the "normal" user who wants some expansion. I'd be somewhat interested in a Core i7 (or even i5) tower with a few PCIe slots. Not going to happen though.
What would concern me if I was in the market is the strong rumour of ARM Macs in the next 1-2 years and a sharp transition away from Intel. Do you really want to be sitting with a £5k+ investment on your desk that is obsolete that quickly?

Even for Apple, that is taking the piss.
k off, we use a propriatary one. If you want a Vesa mount converter it's $199 or 10x the cost of the monitor stand I've just bought. And Apple fans wonder why people think they are dumb for paying the Apple tax.

What sort of user would need to buy a seriously expensive computer with 1.5TB of RAM and a 28-core processor? Not criticising or taking the piss; a genuine question of interest!
A "Pro" user ... this isn't much more expensive than workstation class kit from HP or Dell. It's a niche these days given how competent most standard stuff is but think real time video rendering or similar.
It's also still half the price an Apple Lisa was back in 1983 ...
Another genuine question because I don't know. How many other 'desktop' computers can have more RAM than storage?
The base spec storage on this is 256GB, the RAM can be upgraded up to 1.5TB. It would be a weird spec to do that, previous Mac Pros maximum RAM (up to 128GB) was lower than the base storage (256GB SSD in the cylinder Mac Pro, or a 250GB-1TB hard drive in the cheese graters).

The sort of things this is designed to compete with. Take a look at the Dell 7920 for example. Ships by default with a 500Gb 2.5" 7200RPM SATA drive (in base £2,600 configuration). Criminally slow drive for the price! The system supports up to 3Tb of RAM in the correct dual CPU configuration (the RAM costs £94k)The base spec storage on this is 256GB, the RAM can be upgraded up to 1.5TB. They are meant to be connected to a NAS or similar external storage array, which will contain the files being worked on. Onboard storage is for cache/the apps/OS. All that RAM means you have a better chance of loading the whole video/render in memory, obviously it depends on what the end user is doing here if that amount of RAM is relevant to them.
I buy a new Mac Pro every 8 - 10 years or so, after that time they start to creak.
I use it everyday for my job, and at times I'm running dozens of huge music (and video) files simultaneously, so need some serious ram/speed/reliability. As mentioned, I have outboard storage.
It's actually cheaper than I thought as my last one (2008) was £7k.
Silly money I know, but it's tax deductible and earns me a living.

will you be buying the stand though I use it everyday for my job, and at times I'm running dozens of huge music (and video) files simultaneously, so need some serious ram/speed/reliability. As mentioned, I have outboard storage.

Interesting thread on twitter about how "Pro" the new machine is.
It’s obvious it’s aimed squarely at only high end video editors or VR encoders etc. Gone are the days when us lowly graphic designers needed an old trusty Macpro. The price tag refracts typical Apple pricing and product placement and unless you truly need that horsepower, won’t even feature on most people’s radar now.
It’s a shame Apple haven’t released a MP that suits lower end requirements, as having a machine you can open and upgrade is sorely missed with the current line up.

$5999 for the monitor, which I'm sure will be stunning.....but they want an additional $999 for the stand

Massive miss-sell by Apple, surprised they f
ked this up so badly. if they had said the monitor was $5999 with stand or $500 off without they would have got a cheer. This now looks like gouging esp as the vesa bracket is $200 and you'll need one or the other.ajprice said:

TBh its a workstation, no one will buy it in base spec. But everyone's requirements will be different. some will need a lot of local storage , some will need a lot of local ram, or many cores. All options will be expensive!
I expect though you can throw in crucial memory - not sure about the SSDs as they are custom interface ?I doubt anyone will buy one for less than $10k, more like $15k. Dont know anyone who would need 1.5tb ram tho!
