45 year old driver with a 100% clean never endorsed uk license.. I spend >90% of my life outside the uk but maintain a UK car for my european work.

Got caught by a sneaky speed trap, my fault, not paying enough attention at 7 am on a clear sunny sunday morning open road. Doing 66 in a 50 (its a strange bit of road that goes from dual carriageway to 50 then back to 60.. total non safety enforcement purely for money but hey, he got me, my fault and I was over by more than a mph or two) nnoyingly thats 2 mph over the speed in which I get a speed awareness course.

Images are clear, notice of offence arrived on the 13th day.. Fair cop guv.

I REALLY would like to avoid the points. Fixed penalty ok (paid this morning) and I dont have time or energy to risk court.

Now before I send this away and just accept it.. I happen to have a non uk license, fully legal, from where I keep a home abroad. Anyone have experience at what the likely outcome would be if I was to supply the non uk license to them ??

My UK license is (stupidly in hindsight as I have multiple options) the same address the vehicle is registered at.. I would assume they must cross reference and check ??

I have flights into the uk from that country, and flight exiting the uk to that country in another week.. So I do have the full package of entry flight, exit flight, uk insurance, and the overseas license.. However I also have a Uk license registered at the same address as the vehicle.

Thoughts on a hail mary ?? Or just accept the damn points on a 28 year perfect clean record ??

You won't avoid the points.

If you had no GB licence (at all), the points would be applied to a virtual licence / driver's record held by DVLA. Whether they were able to join the dots and realise you did hold a GB licence would remain to be seen.

There would seem to be nothing to be gained by sending them anything other than your GB licence for endorsement.

What are you trying to achieve?

If the DVLA/courts link you to your exiting UK DL the points will be put on that. If they don't make the connection a driver record, sometimes referred to as a ghost licence, will be created for you and the points allocated to that. Either way you will end up with points linked to you.

I sort of dont care what happens to a ghost license.. I care what happens to my own personal uk one (I hold 4 others but my uk / euro life is on this one)..

What I am trying to establish is once an overseas license is provided.. how much do they keep trying to dig.. and what would be the worst they could do if providing a non uk license.

Your stated objective was to avoid the points.

Save contesting the matter and winning in court, this won't happen.

My objective is to avoid the points being allocated to my uk license..

I have a non uk license (multiple, but one with an associated current IDP).. The paperwork they send me says that overseas license holders should send a photocopy of it..

I am curious if anyones been in the same position and sent a non uk license, while they had a uk license. It cant be that rare.

If so did they cross check and discover the uk one, was there any additional punishment for doing this ??

You won’t get a ghost licence. You would submit your foreign licence, they would input your personal details into the system and likely find that you have a UK licence. So your UK licence would end up end up endorsed anyway.

Thats what I sort of expected.. and what I was trying to ascertain.

For the future I may separate my license address and my car registration address as it will be much harder to link.

Or you could just keep to the speed limit.

So in 28 years you would know that if a stretch of road goes from 60, to 50, to 60 you would keep your vehicle at the perscribed speed - instead of flaunting it by doing 66mph.

Enjoy your points.

This is true Freddy - no one on here ever breaks the limit and we tut loudly whilst shaking our heads!

I'd whack in the foreign one unless they state you must send in an UK one in their T&C's or offer money back guarantees wink

28 years and only one set of points. That's a fair go. I doubt that this one recorded incident of outrageous lawlessness is your only transgression over that 28 year stretch either, so you've done well.

Don't dwell on it, it's not a big deal and it's really not worth trying to cheat the system for something so minor especially given that you don't spend much time in the UK.

Providing proof of emigration got my speeding allegation quashed even though I asked for it to be dealt with quickly and owned up to it.

If you live elsewhere and can prove you have booked a flight then might be worth a go...

I decided I don't have the time, or desire to risk a higher penalty.

If my work was different I might have done, but just giving in on this one.

Even if they messed and didn't link to your licence, you still have 3 points.

OK, say you sent a foreign licence and they mess up and don't assign them to your exisiting licence - how are you going to benefit from this? The only thing I can think of is not declaring it on your insurance renewal.

What do you hope to achieve by avoiding the points?

If it's an insurance thing then why not switch your insurance over to your non-UK county/license which is presumably free of any endorsements?

I think you’ve made the right decision. Think about the worst thing that could happen if you were to send in one of your foreign licences. If DVLA finds out, and the person who finds out has a particularly righteous streak, you could end up in serious trouble. People have been convicted of PCOJ and ended up in jail trying to avoid 3 points on their licences; just ask ex-cabinet minister Chris Huhne and his ex-wife Vicky Pryce. I suspect that in the worst case scenario, what you’re suggesting could result in a similar outcome. If someone has been in and out of jail and an extra 3 months in the clink isn’t going to make much difference to their CV or employability, they might decide that the risk is worth taking. For those of us for whom it would be catastrophic, it would be sheer madness. The most common reason successful people fall from grace spectacularly is usually a moment of madness where they decided to take an unnecessary risk for negligible benefit.

This place is not what it was. Its like mums net and brake have infiltrated.

Anyway, he's right. You've been lucky so far, either that or you keep to the speed limit religiously.

3 points is a rite of passage. It gets every one of us due to complacency.

Take itbon the chin. It will have no impact on your life, but might make you more careful.

This coming from the man that should have been banned in the 80s and 90s. And 4 years ago got 3 points just 2 weeks after going on a speed awareness course.

If i were to speed it would be in the full knowledge that i currently have no points, and my wife would be livid.

Its the one thing she gets angry about. Because i need to be able to drive, otherwise our life would be so.much more complicated.

Few years ago a colleague of mine in his early 50's who who takes no interest in driving at all and had never been done before got caught 3 times in 2 weeks - one of the times was the fixed speed camera down the road from his house! He spent the next 3yrs crapping himself as his job depends on his licence.
