So this is the new shed and a delightful one at that. Replaced the free VW golf (died) and at £650 I'm pleased with it. 2002 model, Part service history, mainly main dealer, 67k miles 3 prev owners.
1.4vvti 5 speed manual, air con, CD, ps, 4 decent tyres. Was advertised at £950 or offers, and 4 miles from home.
Jobs to do- polish headlights, usual Toyota clouding. Aux belt is looking tired, 15 quid from motor factors today. Fitting it tomorrow.
2 new wipers front screen £15
Door seal on drivers door at top is split, not letting rain in but noisy at speed.
That's it. I will need discs and pads prob next year.
Drives Lovely, cheaper tax than vw golf and £31 quid refund from insurance when I swapped over.
Got to love shedding if it works lol.
This is exactly the sort of thing I'm trying to find!! I want to give shedding a go, even just for a year, to save a bit more cash. Cars like yours (low mileage, reliable ones) seem hard to find for that sort of price in my area, so I'm keeping my eye out.

My auto trader search is key. £1k limit, 20 mile radius, auto or manual, private only, no cat c/d and 70k miles or less. Keep the search live with email updates and when something genuine comes up go asap with cash. Test everything, listen to a cold start while watching exhaust. Quick test drive and then make your best genuine offer explaining what you think and why if offering less. I don't do any texting offers or asking in advance, just go and be genuine.
If it pays off you get hopefully a family owned tidy car, sold for genuine reason. If it's not that when you get there you walk away and are only 20 miles from home lol.
This is purely my shed strategy, touch wood it works so far. I've flown to Belfast on new years eve before when buying a proper car for proper money, but £1k max gets you a lot of shed these days!

I avoid eBay completely. Never bought a car from it, too many stories etc.Gum tree yes, I did message about a car locally but it went before I got there. Watch out tho as a few on gum tree tend to not have the log book or "you'll have to send off for it " type stories...

I only had about 9 possible cars on mine, it can be a waiting game. The temptation is to then try £1500 limit, next thing you aren't looking at sheds lol. The other place to find em sometimes is in local shop displays or post offices, quite often older people don't use the internet still and rely on a card in their local shop, or sometimes word of mouth from colleagues or friends once they know you are looking. My other "shed" is an older corrolla that cost £400-500 from a friend. He bought it from his great aunt, as a first car for his learner daughter, and she refused it lol. 3 years and 30k miles later it's still going strong, less than £300 spent in that time. It was 14yrs old and had 14 main dealer services when we got it, scuffs and scrapes everywhere but a robust solid low miles car. I'd still get 600 quid for it now !

Your issue might be insurance given an old jap car is often quite pricey compared to new. Something like that seems like it'd be cheap on fuel, fairly reliable and an easy car to live with as a runaround.
I've seen loads of Ka's and Fiesta's that have 30kish miles on for £300-£500, but they are all rusted to crap.

Despite having had my Corolla for 9 years, I've only just noticed this!I can only add to the often told stories of just how reliable these are. I bought mine at 24,000 miles and it's just hit 175,000 and keeps on going strong. Just had the a/c checked and regassed and even it is in good nick. The only time it's ever broken was when it was at meet and greet parking at Luton when it mysteriously snapped a driveshaft (insert your own theory here). Oh and it did once have a small oil leak, but that fixed itself after a week.
It owes me nothing, but I utterly love it. Utterly dependable transportation that's like a faithful dog that never lets you down. I'll keep it until it dies, which may be still a long time away.
