I know that frequently PHers ask about road trip holidays. I thought that maybe some peeps might find our trip interesting, so here goes.

Let me start by saying that 'er indoors arranges everything. My only responsibility is the car...and this year I failed at the first hurdle! Our peage tag was many years old so we thought it prudent to get a fresh one. I tossed the new one in the car without looking at it. On the Chunnel train I thought I'd attach it to the screen. Mark 2 is completely different & did not fit the existing clip.

But! I always carry tape in the car hehe

Not very elegant...but got my nuts out of the fire!

Day 1 was just a blast from Nottingham to Reims. We left at 08.00 and were having a swift beer late afternoon.

Day 2 was 723 km blast down to St Remy de Provence. If you've not been it's a gorgeous place with plenty to see & do nearby.

We stopped here:

At this point I was going to post some photos, but they are all too big. So stick with me while I reduce the file size. Be back soon.

Doh! Being a car forum I probably should have mentioned that the car of choice is our Golf R. There are a lot of nay sayers surrounding this vehicle...but let me tell you it's pretty much perfect for a trip like this. (especially at the grand prix exits for the toll booths)

Me & 'er indoors are now of a certain age. Years ago we would have taken the Golf's partner..

...but suddenly we find air-con, luggage space, the ability to talk at 130 kph (although that benefit is dubious) very comforting.

St Remy itself is picture perfect.

Within walking distance of the town are roman ruins

Walking trails into the mountains

As well as a sad place where Van Gogh wasn't so well.

After 3 night in St Remy we set off to Montpellier.

En route we stopped at Les Baux. (Famous for aluminium producing bauxite apparently). It's a stunning hill top village complete with castle

Stunning place, but by the looks of the parking best avoided in peak season.

That's me done for tonight. I'll tell you a bit about Montpellier & the Camargue tomorrow, and then our onward trip.

Nighty night.

+1 you're in one of my favorite parts of France. Aigue Morte, flamingos, white horses, bull running and cowboys, bring it on.

I have also renewed my tag this year, and I was livid when I saw that the new one didn't fit the old clip, knowing that the clips are near impossible to remove from the screen. What idiot made that decision? *rage*

Hotel was beautiful, and guess what? Parking spaces big enough for modern cars!

It was just a bit too poncey for me though. £16 a pint didn't help. That was about the price at the Carassins, but there I could nip down to the local, here you really are isolated.

..and I think the UK supplied tags are different to those used by the locals

We had a day in Montpellier proper & Sète. The former was a bit like a hot Mansfield...the biggest tourist attraction was a viaduct. We didn't really click with Montpellier...not helped by finding ourselves barricaded in a square surrounded by masses of gendarmes with riot gear & machine guns. No idea what was going on but it was not comfortable!

Next we went out to the bird park in the Camargue. It was wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!!

We loved it so much we went back successive days.

We visited a few other random places before moving on.

Up to now we've had the aperitif. Next we head off for (what we consider) to be the main course!

When I was a yoof I used to maintain that the world is too big a place to go somewhere twice. In later life, however, we now have some set favourites.

This is one of them:

http://www.welcomehotel.com/english/

It's a hop skip & a rev from Montpellier, just 340 km.

It's a very personal love for the place that we have. Others may go & hate it. We had six nights relaxing.

Bonus of big beer (not too expensive at 9 euro) and an Alfa. Loads of lovely cars pass be here

We are leaving in our trip on Saturday morning, heading down to the alps in to Italy for a few days in Rimini were we intend to visit Tavulia[Valintino Rossi's town] before heading up to Garda for a few nights.
Back through the Alps in to France and along the Med towards Sete.
Sete last year.
