Yes, a what car thread-bumpy commute

Looking for a car for my commute.

My daily drive is 2 miles across an airfield , and then 15 miles of poor country lanes. The type where you are up the grass verge when you meet an oncoming car, and there are lots of bumpy surfaces and some pot holes, and lots of bumps/holes in the edges of the verge.

Of course I would love something fast, or even bargetastic, but when we had a Merc E class, it was banging and crashing all over the place.

Something old and cheap would be best, but what?

Fast and good on poor surfaces...Bowler? For £5k you're probably going to have to sacrifice your fast requirement. I have my eyes on the new shape Vitara for similar + dog + station duties in a couple of years. Unfortunately the turbo ones are still about £10k but the boggo 1.6 is about £7k.

That's a dilemma that I have, too. I haven't yet found the ideal compromise but I keep looking.

Fast is rarely good on poor roads. Indeed, is fast even possible on poor roads?
Stuff that's good on poor roads is rarely fast if you only want to pay £5k and want reliability.

The best solution I've found so far is Vauxhall Viva on account of being cheap, narrow (1.59m) and good ground clearance (20cm) also great mpg (60+ real mpg). It's done over 30k, much of it on minor roads, and never damaged a tyre or wheel on a pothole or verge. Also contrary to what this forum would have you believe of Vauxhall, it has been 100% reliable.

But it's slow and needs a lot of gear changes for corners and hills. And I wonder whether my 'reliable' comment will come back and bite me in the @$$ because the engine has to be thrashed a lot.

I am OK with slow. Fast would be nice, but i am happy to bimble along all steady!
