Gonna get a short term ban shortly for 99mph in a 70(magistrate has already said as much). I have, until now, 17yrs of clean licence. Can anyone give me an indication of how much this will affect my insurance. If its loads ill have to sell some of the toys
You're going to get a ban for 99mph? Blimey! That seems harsh...
My insurance went up about £50 for 3pts - and the 3pts don't present a problem anywhere else, either. I fyou have lots of cars (I have three) I'm afraid that £50 extended to all of them.
Luckily I get £50 discount or so on all of them as I have an IAM pass and a ROSPA Gold.
This may help you. Worth a try! Although with the IAM there is a limit of six points on your licence you are allowed prior to taking the test - dunno what a ban would mean. Check before spending money!
I don't reckon this will mean an end to your toys. What will slow you down a bit in future is the problem that it takes FIVE years for points/offences to drop off your licence for insurance purposes - although only THREE for the dreaded "totting up".
You'll be fine. Good luck.
I too had a clean licence - 16 years in my case, when I was banned for doing 109 in a 60 in my RS. I went to court, was banned for a month and fined £450. The good news was that I received no points - a straight ban - one hit...so after the ban period my licence was effectively "clean".
The effect on my insurance was a hike of about 25% IIRC. This all happened in 1998 - I don't know whether the passage of time has affected the judicial system....

99 in a 70? That sounds dangerous .....I think NOT. Sounds like a dual carriageway of some sorts. It makes you think really, last Sunday I drove down to Trier in germany and then up to the ring. Cruising at 120mph nearly all the way with some quicker bursts. Many others doing the same, no problems whatsoever. Limits were imposed in areas that needed them but no where else. How much more PC is the UK going to get?
You have my sympathies.

That certainly isn't mandatory. I was told that 100mph and above in a 70 was a definite ban, yet I got 5 points and £200 for 100mph on the A449 in Wales.
It's all down to how you represent the event and yourself. I pleaded guilty in writing and put forward all my mitigating circumstances.
1. High performance car.
2. Perfect weather and no traffic meant superb visibility, but no other traffic to help gauge my speed.
I also mentioned that if I was banned I'd have to make some staff redundant as it would be impossible for me to travel to see customers.
I thought their judgement was reasonable.

99 in a 70 doesn't seem right for a ban. 59 in a 30 i could understand, but 99 in a 70?
How many people do you see on dual carriageways and motorways doing 85mph, all day every day?
Still, look on the bright side. If you get a short ban (2 weeks, 4 weeks?) you may well escape with no points at all.
I wish you the very best of luck.

You have my sympathy Simon.
With the benefit of local knowledge, presumably that was the 'deadly' stretch of the A449 - The slalom-like section through the housing estate with swarms of children playing on the grass verge, and presumably you drove down there at about half three when the schools were emptying? - Oh no, hang on, that would be the virtually empty, perfectly sufaced, arrow-straight dual carriageway near Raglan where the bastards park their van in the lay-by I suppose?
I got 3 points there for doing 88 mph at 08.00 on a sunny Sunday morning - bastards.

How do you mean that a ban comes off your license immediately? It doesn't it stays on for 5 years unlike points which last 3. Unless I've confused myself at any rate. (I have had the dubious pleasure of a short ban myself for 105 mph on the A3)
I was banned - but with no points on my licence at all. Those that are banned on a totting up basis wouldn't be so lucky...perhaps if I'd already had some points on the licence, the magistrate would have simply added enough points to get me on totting up.
I agree that the ban itself remains on your licence for 5 years though.
Yep they will tot up to give you a ban if they possibly can. I think that leads to a longer ban than they can simply award under guidelines.
I'm somewhat surprised that mentioning the ownership of a high performance car didn't count against you. I know that when I got the ban, the chap after me got 2x the fine and a longer ban for the same speed in a 70 as me. The only difference was that he drove a Porsche (and old nail of one).
SPD (short period disqualifications) i.e. to 56 days, should not affect your insurance if you already have a clean license (ceertainly the case with NU policies).
I got caught doing 98 in a 60 last year, but as my case was heard by a district judge rather than a magistrate, I received 6pts and a 150 fine, as opposed to a ban. At least with a ban you still have a 'clean' license.
Be careful in your mitigating plea that it doesn't appear that you are trying to justify the speed. This can get the mags backs' up!
As ever, check out pepipoo.co.uk for advice, protocol, etc.
Hope it all goes well for you. take it in your stride - you've got away with it for some time!!!

That was the one mate. My wife's from Cardiff so we go down their occassionally. The only points (3&5) were picked up in Wales. Both on bone dry, empty dual carriageways. People just don't have accidents on dry empty dual carriageways.
I was doing 130 in a 996 when I spotted the camera van, I'm no nutter, my son was in the back and my pregnant wife was in the passenger seat. We were simply cruising at less than 70% of the cars ability.

Speak to Michael O'Garra Or Sean Smith at O'Garra Smith Gold - 0113 247 1477
For the price of a phone call (initially!), they'll at least tell you whether its worth fighting. They're based in Leeds, but are very good at what they do.
Tell then John gave you their number
Clarky, how do you 'know' you are going to get a ban? a speeding case is normally a 'half-hour' type affair if you plead guilty, so how can the magistrate know the details already?
If you are pleading 'not guilty' has the case been heard yet? If not then the magistrate is surely 'pre-judging' the case. If the case has been heard how come the decision is not official yet?
Something does not sound right here

Don't know about now but in 1999 108mph on M40 was 18days £225. in 2000 112 on M40 was 28days £400.
Pleased to say nothing since.
Rule of thumb is in excess 100 on motorway is a ban. Not seem to be applying here though!
Whilst on any ideas on good tyre shop that won't butcher the wheels on my 997 cs? West london ideally.
