I'm quite interested in getting one so wanted to know what they're like to live with, what I need to look for when buying etc.

2002 tii, bought 1989, sold 1994.
Brilliant car in it's day, mine suffered rust:
bonnet edges
boot edges
boot floor
front bulkhead
door bottoms

Sills and floor were OK

Quick at 130bhp in a light car, nice gear change, top end rebuild about 100K miles
Koni shocks/struts improve even more
Janspeed exhaust ditto

I sold at a time that I was moving and had no where to store, subsequent buyer has it now and rallies it in the Scottish Borders

Two other things, we used it to tow an Escort Rally car about and it's not a good car for that as it's quite a distance from back wheels to back of car
And the local bairns used to think it as a Lada with BMW badges (it was a similar colour - Inca Orange)

I had a ca. 1972 round rear light 2002 when I lived in Germany in 1991/2. It was a lovely standard car and very discreet in beige with steel wheels and hub caps. It was only my second ever car and plenty quick enough, even in standard 100bhp form with a 4 speed manual gearbox.

Overall very reliable. The only thing I remember going wrong was something within the distributor that was causing hesitation. The local garage sorted it. The previous owner of mine had restored the bodywork himself and had it professionally resprayed, so corrosion was no issue for me, despite the car living outside.

I did have a bump, which required a new front wing. It was easy to replace:
1) bought a new wing from BMW
2) unscrewed a few bolts to remove the old wing
3) bolted on new wing.
4) Added about an inch of welding at the leading edge
5) Off for painting.

I was sad to see it go, but was moving back to the UK. I still keep a look out for them and would certainly recommend one as a practical classic. Certainly more interesting than a lot of the more popular dross out there.

THIS, totally agree.

Should have added the front panel to the rust list BTW
And the tii with Kugelfischer injection is no where near as complicated as people who haven't had one make out.
(Rather that than computer driven everything)

You've got me thinking now but a decent 2002 tii is rather more than my pocket will stretch too I guess.
1989 bought about £1200, sold as a needs bodywork in 1994 for £800ish.

I've had a 2002 and now have a 1602 which isn't quite standard. The 1602 is quite possibly the most fun car I've ever driven. Loves being revved and driven hard, but all within legal road speeds. Plus they look fantastic whether standard or a little modified.

And you've got quite an interesting garage by the looks of it.
Doesn't show the BM by the way.
Would be interested to know what you've done to the 1600 to improve performance etc.Have you got it to 2002 tii levels?

I bought one in 2017, i'd never been in or driven one but knew i wanted one. I like classics and i like drivers cars and everyone who i'd spoken to about 2002's said they were awesome to drive.

I nearly bought a standard sahara beige 2002 but in the end I bought a body restored Tii with the gearbox sitting in the boot along with half the engine, no Tii injection and have set about getting it on the road up until last month really, i've got a bit carried away with it but it's genuinely the best car i've ever driven and quite possibly been in.

Prices were going up and up when i was looking, they seem to have levelled out a tad at the moment but still rising overall, there's not a better time than now to get one!

Build thread on mine for reference:

Thanks thumbup The BMW wasn't supposed to be staying but I fell a little in love and its not left yet! I didn't modify any of it so don't know much of whats been done. I don't believe the running gear is far from stock if at all though. The modifications have been to suspension etc so it handles nicer. Its just a hilarious little thing that makes a great noise.

The 1502 / 1602 / 2002 range were BMW Concessionairs GBs best selling cars. When the Dealers were told that they each had to take a 3.0CSL, they groaned, as they just could not get enough 2002s.
I had a low miles, Inca orange ( best colour ) ban the bomb rear light, M registered 2002tii.
It had been fitted with an electric steel Sunroof ( and sadly a vinle roof ) when new, by BMW Concessionairs GB.
What a car, but like all BMWs of the time, they rot badly.
My one needed a roof skin, front wings, bonnet, boot lid, rear arches and sill repairs and a repair to the bulkhead. But surprisingly the usually rotten rear shock towers were perfect on it. I sold it to someone who said he had found 2 Polish guys who were going to rebuild the shell for him.
There was / is a good range of repair sections and mechanical parts available for these and the CSL, from W and N.

Mine too was a L plate ban the bomb inca orange tii
I replaced the pillar aerial with a roof one, didn't have the sunroof or vynyl roof thankfully.
Sills, roof, rear quarters, rear turrets, inner wings, sill etc were spot on back in 1994. Couldn't say the same for bulkhead and boot floor.
HTY817L - still around in the Scottish Borders as a rally car.

And a sunbeam alpine, maybe that’s too obvious for this forum smile

Drove it as a running project and broke down after 6 miles (after filling it to the brim), then restored it and never got to drive it before it went. I'd very much like a Tiger!

Your 2002 looks very similar to mine from that front angle!

Mines a 1602 but yes it does. I've been following your thread and very impressed with your car and the way you've done it, it looks fantastic and is a great representation of just how fantastic an 02 can be as a classic. Mine is a bit more stickered up. I've done nothing to it and its not as tidy as yours but I love it.
