Hi guys,

Just after some ownership advice/experience.. I currently own a 2008 passat highline estate that I use primarily for commuting to work.. my commute is 64 miles one way and I do it around 14 days a month. The passat has been superb, genuinely cant knock it.. I've racked up 26,000 miles in just over a year and with the exception of servicing and tyres it had cost me nothing.

I'm interested in a making a change, I'm now on 110,000 miles in the passat which will likely hit 140k this time next year.. I've had my eye on Mercedes C220 CDI's for a while and quite like the 2008-09 model (I dont want to spend too much as it'll just get racked with miles again).

Would this be a good choice to go to for the type of commute I do?? It's mainly A roads with approx 15 miles on country roads that are quite open.

If the C220 isnt any good, can anyone perhaps give some suggestions for other cars to look at?

I do like the passat, it has everything bar sat nav and bluetooth so something of similar spec would be great. I guess reading this back the first question would be, if the passat is so good then why sell... well, like I mentioned before I fancy a change and want to go for something with a few less miles. I can imagine I've had it good for too long and there could well be an expensive bill around the corner!!

I had a c220 on a 53 plate, avantgarde spec. It was a very nice place to sit and looked the part polished up. However, it had a habit of randomly cutting out when cold which no garage managed to get to the bottom of and in the wet/snow etc it was appalling... struggled to get out the car park up a very slight incline. Winter tyres might have helped I guess.

I'm not sure if electrical problems are common or I was just unlucky.

The 08 C220 is a good car and will cover huge miles; I ended up with an E220 when my Passat engine died. I thought I'd have it for a while, but four years later (and at over 200k) it's refusing to die.

The price you're quoting might be OK, might not. Usual things of mileage, maintenance, condition, spec etc apply. But if all of that works for you, you'll have a good (albeit reasonably dull) car which will be perfect for your daily driving.

I had a 57 plate sport edition, very nice car to drive but crap on fuel.

I was only getting 25mpg at best, Mercedes told me that due to the auto it would not be much better.

I have an 09 C220 d bluemotion estate, It's a nice relaxing place to be, decent music, electric tailgate and a few toys, does late 30's round town, mid to high 50's on a decent run ave is about 46 so not bad at all for me.

I am sure it will have faults but apart from me noticing and replacing a very corroded brake pipe running over the top of the rear axle so far so good!

I change the oil at 6K max miles and always use Shell fuel.

Fine/good in the wet, no snow experience so far..

I’m running a 57 plate C220cdi currently on 248k miles.

I’ve grown rather fond of it.

Cheers for the feedback guys. The other option was a Freelander 2 but although it will likely be comfortable ride I'm guessing fuel economy will be considerably worse than both the Passat and the Merc?
