Also worth mentioning Whiskey Myers, one of their guitarists is an extremely good slide player. He really seems to go for it a lot more live than on the albums, so the live performances are better. Couple of examples:

Worked with a number of music fans over the last few years none of whom "get" the Captain.

Rest assured I know which one is the Captain! Like you I was buying his albums back in the sixties. I was recently shocked to discover it was the 50th anniversary of Troutmask Replica, an album that still challenges today.

Actually, on the album version, the slide guitar is played by no less than Ry Cooder, previously mentioned on this thread, who was a member of the Magic Band at one time, threatening to bring a degree of musical rationality into the proceedings. He left the band after the famous Monterey Festival, where the Magic Band was booked to perform but never did. They all trooped out onto the stage, followed by The Captain, who took one look at the crowd, turned round 180 degrees and walked off the back of the stage, falling to the ground some distance below. (Actually, his fall was broken by his manager, who he landed on.) The band looked at eachother, and departed the stage by a more conventional method.

Beefheart later explained his behaviour by saying that when he looked at the crowd he saw a girl turn into a fish and bubbles came out of her mouth. Well, anybody would leave under those circumstances.

Cooder left after that, recognising a certain lack of commercial potential in that outfit.
