as the title states whos going to win out of reliability/ fuel / performance / handling etc. i have been looking at purchasing the list of vehicles above but have heard mixed reviews of all of them the main would be fuel economy as i only do a 6 mile commute to work and 6 home but when not in work i do a fair few miles ranging from 10-70dd a day so can vary looking forward to hearing your feedback thanks all

X drive saps a lot of economy so the 335d does worse MPG than a pre LCI 535d.

One is saloon / estate the other two hatchbacks so there could be elimination there depending on your needs.

hi mate i am currently using a c220 cdi sport and that isnt the best on fuel hence im avering around 230miles a week on 40 pounds so that gives a ruff idea my mate seems to think that going to a petrol will be a better route for me. i am 21 i have not got a family of my own yet so just me and the partner. i have been looking at the 335d xdrive as living in wales when it snows it is bad and having a hill by mine its a pain.

Out of those three - the M140i and some Michelin CrossClimate's - last of the 6cyl BMW's, not dragging around a 4wd system, decent ride/handling balance, brisk car day2day.

You're averaging 32mpg over your 230 miles a week in reality none of those petrol alternatives will be better on fuel in fact they'll probably be worse but you'll have fun using up the extra fuel.

I'm currently running an M140i which predominantly gets used for my 14 mile drive to work each day. Over 11500 miles it's averaged 27.5mpg. It's a manual: the auto I'm told gets a bit better economy.

My last car was a 2007 S3 and that got 34mpg on the same commute. I'm told that VAG notorioisly over estimate mpg and I never tested it so I've no idea how close it was. I have calculated the M140i mpg manually though and found the OBC to be bang on.

The biggest difference is in the way they drive though - the S3 was so capable it was a bit boring. The M140i is a bit of an animal to try and drive fast as the suspension is a bit crap so it tends to be more fun!

I’m averaging around 30mpg in my auto M140i over the last 23k miles which is mostly short trips to and from nursery/station then longer motorway runs at the weekend. I don’t drive for economy and every journey will have me enjoying the car’s performance even in the winter months when it’ll be running winter tyres.

At 21 Insurance might negate any fuel savings though?

hi guys thanks for the replies my only other option would be is a 435d or 335d xdrive but i am worried i may kill it with my style of driving doing short runs majority of the time. from what i can see is the m140i is the more favorable out of the cars i have listed. many have said that the s3 is capable but too safe cant have alot of fun in it. does the m140i have launch control same as the s3

I’m looking at similar engines, I don’t want xdrive as don’t need it and cars with it sit slightly higher and just look a bit ‘off’ imo.

I have a 3.0 diesel now and I’m the same as you don’t really wanna go diesel with next car as I’m scared of dpf with short journeys.

Been looking at 235/40i and 435/440i, mpg seems like it would work out the same as what I get now (25mpg) and tbh I’d rather something a bit more economical and I know deep down the 428/430i would be enough for what I need. I just can’t bring myself to buy a 4 pot beemer haha.

In a bit of a plot twist I’ve been looking at the new 508 Peugeot.

What about hybrid power, these seem to get slightly cheaper insurance quotes.

Now if you want quick (0-60 in the 5's) AWD & decent fuel numbers then the Infiniti Q50 35h Sport is well worth a look, I'm not sure of your type of journey but I have two family members with these & they're averaging around 35-37mpg.

Infiniti cars do seem good value ( I am aware they are leaving the UK/EU) but how big a gamble is it?

If keeping the cars for a long time residuals may not matter but what about parts, repairing accident damage etc etc?


I must admit I have been tempted by them.

Parts are fine as the drivetrains are used in other Nissan/Mercedes/Renault models, the dealerships will turn into Nissan Premium Centres, you can still extend warranties & buy service packs, so no issues long term & because the drivetrains are shared across other platforms a good Indy will be able to service them without any issues.

I only keep my cars 12months so I don't keep them long my main worry is fuel more then anything I know these are not cars to be buying for Eco friendly but I think I could manage if it's running the same as mine. I couldn't bring my self to the infinity range. With my type of driving is it risky me even considering a diesel.

I ran an F30 330d xdrive for the years, my commute is a whopping one mile, four times a day. Throw in some evening trips to the shops of about five miles and then a few longer trips throughout the year. Never had a single dpf issue.

Same for my current car which is also a 3.0d six cylinder, although it's a facelift and I believe the dpf was relocated so doesn't cause problems.

This is interesting what year was your 330d f30 mate and may I ask what car your using know I have looked into the bitdi a7 but heard loads about gear box issues

FE figures for a 2018 RWD 330d are identical to a 2018 335d xdrive.

Agree a 140i will be nice, ideal for a young man with no kids. CC’s are great but check rim sizes before you buy a car, IIRC they don’t go above 18”.

There is no such thing as a 335i xdrive is there? They were all rwd as far as I was aware.

Bitdi uses ZF 8 speed, generally reliable gearbox
