I installed a dash cam in my car a couple of years ago and even though i've never needed it, its worth the money for peace of mind if some throbber for example reverses into me and claims I rolled into the back of them.
Had one or 2 close calls on the bike, mainly idiots pulling out without looking etc so I'm considering a camera for insurance/evidence purposes only.

So can anyone recommend a fairly budget but good option, no need for a Go pro or anything high end. As long as it has a half decent charge and can see a reg plate at a reasonable distance.

These Go pro clones seem popular:

But they look totally awkward for mounting on a helmet. But thinking about it, for insurance purposes it would probably make sense to mount it on the bars right? Maybe even plugged into a permanent ignition fed 12v feed.

Innovv has a system worth looking at. I think it was mentioned on a thread here not too long ago.

I have a Drift Stealth 2, it proved invaluable in securing the prosecution of the driver who deliberately knocked me off last year.
Even in the dark and at 720 resolution, you could still clearly seeing him giving me the coffee beans as he pulled back across on me!
It seemed reliable, battery was good for the two way commute each day, and with a 32Gb card it would record a weeks footage it more before over writing.

Ive had 2 Drift Stealth 2`s. Both have packed in, they don't seem very long lived but were superb when they worked. I suspect the batteries fried when in the sunshine as I rarely ride in the wet.

I was looking at the drift cameras, but long term reviews all said the same, they stopped working when needed.
I've just gone for a refurbished Hero 6 Black and chin mount for my helmet.

I've had a Drift 4K since they first came out (2-3 years?) and it's been spot on.

I had a near miss some time ago when about to pull out of a side turning. A car approached from the right giving a left turn signal, looks promising. It slowed down, looks good. It started to turn, great I can go. Then the driver changed his mind, Yikes.

If I'd hit him it would have appeared to be my fault even with a forward facing camera. But a helmet cam would have shown the whole story.

Ill probably get one then, just cant decide which. The Drift seems a bit too iffy for me for the price.
For £110 I could get 3 GoPro knock offs.

I’ve had a few at various budgets as a back up just in case...tended on a combination of a helmet camera and one mounted to the rear of the bike above the number plate.
Helmet cam wise,I wanted something smaller than a GoPro so bought a Drift Stealth 2,which as a camera was perfect in the quality of footage, features and its size. However over the two or so years that I had it,I became increasingly frustrated with the app and all of the glitches when trying to download and view footage. It was a nightmare,so in the end I sold it and ended up with a TomTom bandit.Footage is really good and it has some nice features.
It’s slightly bigger than the stealth but as an overall package is superior.
Both the Stealth and the Bandit have remote control options are handy with bike gloves on.
I started off with a cheap Campark action camera on the rear, but I found that despite it being housed in a fully waterproof case,it tended to switch itself off-whether this is due to a fault, vibration or exhaust heat,I could never work it out,so it was returned. I also bought a GoPro Hero 7 black but I can’t mount this on the rear so it’s in a drawer.
What I like about the GoPro is it’s tried and tested, has a good app for downloading and day and night time footage is excellent.
The cheap chinese variants are ok as a cheap holiday cam imo, however I want to be able to rely on it and their cheap construction and the issues I’ve had leave me wary. You do get masses of kit with these camera though and the mountings are GoPro compatible.
I do feel a bit of a tit wearing one,but the Bandit and stealth look the best. The GoPro type are huge-especially if you are an all weather rider as you will need a dive case which is just bigger than the camera but makes the whole thing huge on top of a lid.
The bandit and stealth is waterproof and the bandit comes with a waterproof lens cover.
Some decent 3M backing on your mounts and they won’t budge at all.
I have tried mounting a GoPro on the bars using a proper mount, but the bounce made the footage gash and it obviously does capture what you are looking at.Top of the helmet has been the best mounting point for me.Nice viewing angle that captures almost everything.
