US and Russia Warships: games in South China Sea.
Discussion
Anyone want to try and work out what happened here?
BBC News - Russia and US warships almost collide in East China Sea
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-48553568
The aerial still looks like the Russian vessel came up from the LHS and aligned itself with US vessel.
The video from Onboard US vessel shows relatively straight forward course of Russian vessel.
Any other images around?

In that BBC picture it's very obvious, not just from the wake but the ships position, that the Russian ship was on the Starboard side of the US Ship so, under Maritime Law, the US ship MUST give way and pass behind the Russian ship."If you are approaching another boat from its starboard side, you have right of way. However, if the other boat does not give way, you must take action to avoid a collision."
Thats a simple problem and something the Russians play with often in the area of public relations, even to the point of having those guys "sunbathing" on the rear deck to show just how unfussed they were in the situation compared to the "aggressive - ready for war" US ship.

Absolutely incorrect."If you are approaching another boat from its starboard side, you have right of way. However, if the other boat does not give way, you must take action to avoid a collision."

Looking at the still and the wake from the Russian ship and from the video posted it would appear the Russian ship is at fault although it’s both Parties responsibility to avoid a collision I’m guessing the US ship was standing it’s ground/course.
That's just the camera angle isn't it? If the photo was taken in line with the Russian ship's original course it would look like the US ship cut across it and the Russian ship had to move out of the way. From the direction of the wakes the Russian ship was "crossing" (which means one ship "crosses" the path of another) which means the US ship, which has a ship "crossing" on it's starboard side, should "Give Way" to the Russian ship, although both ships have a duty to avoid an accident.

"Overtaking" is from astern just like a car, and can be done on either side.

It doesnt matter if it was overtaking or a simple crossing situation. Technically both ships are in the wrong.
If it was a crossing situation then the basic rule is this:

On that basis the yank ship should have kept clear.
However that doesnt mean you can crash into another ship if it doesnt give way to you, you have an obligation to avoid a collision regardless of how the other party behaves.

Now for those that think the result was "safe" taking into account the high level of manouverability of the vessels concerned clearly hasn't driven a ship close to another and the hazards and unique effects you can experience at such close distances.
So in this scenario, the yanks were wrong for just carrying on blindly and forcing the commies to move. the commies were also wrong for not taking action sooner to avoid collision.
If it was an overtaking situation and the commies were the overtaking vessel, they should have kept clear. The rules 17aII) and 17b) (second pic above) would still apply to the yanks with the russians looking like they wont move.
So the russians were wrong for not keeping clear and the yanks for clearly taking no action (lol typical) when the rules said they should have taken action.
In reality I bet there was a lot of willy waving going on in the ops room and bridges of both vessels with the rules of the road being looked at for point scoring reasons rather than avoiding a collision. THe yanks were probably charging ahead as they usually do refusing to let anyone get in thier way, the russians probably saw a good opportunity to be pedantic about the rules and try and p
s off/show up the yanks and that footage is the result.
