Hi chaps...

I've been persuading my partner to get into a GTV as her next car. She'll be hard pushed to spend more than £5k, so will be looking at about a 98 with 45k ish miles.

Anyone got any tips on what to look out for, so as not to pick a wrong-un?

Any advice appreciated...

Joel.

If you are prepared for, possibly, regular minor maintenance, fine, but be careful of the gearbox, as mine has failed after 39 000 kilometres, and I have read of a similar case on this forum.
Think carefully, but the car is great fun and apart from this worth the effort.

In all honesty if it is you're only car don't get a 147 instead.

Things to watch out for - diesel noise on startup - the camshaft variator needs replacing. Patchy or no service history. Cambelt change will be required ever 36000 miles on the T-Spark. Ignore the service manual they snap and alfa recommends changing more regularly now. Dodgy wipers (wiper motor), dodgy electric aerials (keep it oiled), a lack of oil (The T-Spark loves to drink oil think 500ml per 1000 miles), rear suspension bushes fail - can lead to subframe damage and expensive repairs, airbag warning light, wind noise on electric windows, Check the brown master key is present - they actually come with 4 keys (2 red main keys, 1 service key and 1 brown key which is required if you need more), you should also get a code card.

All the usual stuff, brake condition, tyre wear (inside edges), crash damage etc

Get a phase 2 with improved interior (silver dash, better leather), colour coded sills etc.

If you do buy one good luck, a wonderful car, just keep both eyes open!

Not necessarily - they were often withheld at the insistence of UK insurance companies.
