Hi all. We have a 2003 996 Carrera 4. I fitted a new pair of Pirelli PZeros on the rear in November 2018 and now some 6000 miles later, they are down to 3 or 4mm. Quite evenly worn across the tread but that seems quite heavy given its my wife's daily driver and she drives it like a fairy. However I know these can go through rears quickly - is this about right? What are you guys getting from yours?

Still original springs/dampers/bushes?
Car mileage?
Most recent alignment check?
Regular tyre pressure checks?

Plenty can contribute to premature wear and deliver sub-optimal drive.

My P zero's lasted 8000 miles on my turbo, fronts still had 5-6mm left, but changed them all for PS2's

I've had Michelin PS4 tyres on my c2 since July 2017 and with just coming up to 10,000 miles on them I have >5mm tread all round and I don't hang about (that mileage includes a CAT performance driver day at Millbrook too) ;-)

Thanks for the replies - keep them coming as its good to a feel for how long these should last. Wheel alignment etc is ok. I have dropped the pressures a touch recently: they are now 32 front/38 rear. My gut feeling is that PZeros just don't last that long.

Not relating to 996 (I don't have one unfortunately but....)

P Zero is a fast wearing tyre. Last time I had these was on an Alfa Romeo Q4, and they struggled to get to 5,000 miles. The Mich that I replaced them with ran to 15,000 without problems. I've had the same with Conti on my 987 - they wore out fast and didn't grip too well. Change for PS2s that have now been on for 10k miles and still have about 5mm left.

The problem I have with P Zeros is that they wear out fast, but don't seem to offer any noticeable improvement in grip compared to Mich.

I seem to remember getting good 10,000 out the rear on both my 996 carerra and 996 turbo.

Even wear across the tyre suggests pressures and alignment are OK, I used to reckon on 10,000kms for Pirellis on the front & rear of the 996 GT3 which is around 6,000 miles, but that was driven quite hard. Maybe your Mrs. only drives it gently when you're looking.........

You should find you get better wear from Michelins although personally I found the Pirelli had higher ultimate grip, possibly because the wear out so fast that the rubber never gets old & hard...

I found the PZero's on the back of my GT3 wore out very quickly from memory around 4000 miles at most, the PS2's I replaced them with have lasted much better.

When I bought my C4s they had the continentals all round, they were 12 years old, still 5mm all round 1 owner from new but cracking in side walls so I replaced them - car had done 35,000 by a retired chap that was a proper miss daisy.

Thanks again everyone. The conclusion so far is that Pirelli PZeros simply wear out quicker than other tyres and the simple answer is to change to something else next time.

Either that or my Mrs has a track day fetish that I don't know about.
