We have an 11Kv line terminating on our land and currently supplying some farm sheds.

We have a new build medium sized residential house 700m away and hopefully our own larger home, should planning approval succeed, roughly 700m away in almost the opposite direction. Both are also on our land, contiguous with the 11Kv supply location.

DNO quotes for supply to the first house have been eye-watering. We are approaching IDNOs.

What are the regs about private supply? Ideally I'd like both houses to have meters at the respective properties and the supply entirely owned and operated by the DNO. But if the costs are £60K+ and a private line could be much cheaper, I'd consider having the meters next to the 11Kv supply.

I know this was done in the past - have regulations changed in the current day?

We would be considering a mix of overhead cable and underground.

Have you considered going off grid, for those sort of sums it may well be worth it.

No - but open to being convinced that it might work.

Central Scotland, four bedroom 250 sq m house and six bedroom 430 sq m house.

Not sure about heating yet for the bigger house. Neither will be fully passive. Can see a need for car recharging at some point in the future....

A big part of the cost is the labour to dig the trench to spec. So if you can get the DNO to separate the quote, you might find you can tender the trench digging part for much cheaper (or do it yourself if you have the equipment on a farm)

Biomass for heating and a mixture of renewables/battery storage with back up generator.
