Going to see an approved used Ford tomorrow evening, the first time I have ever bought a car from a dealer. Any top tips for negotiating, haggling, things to do, things to not do?

Most recent MOT showed front tyres at legal limit so I'll be pushing for those to be changed. It''s a wet clutch Powershift coming up to it's oil change service so might try and bring that into any bargain too!

These things will probably already have been/are going to be addressed anyway.
It may well be that the car has just arrived and is unprepared.

This. Tyres and service will likely have already been checked/done. Check them yourself. Check the history, check all of the car and make sure you're happy with it.

You can ask for money off/haggle a bit but don't be shocked/upset if they don't/won't do much off, margins are slimmer than they used to be.

As long as you're happy then go ahead and get it bought.

Compare it to similar cars price wise, if its cheap then see if they will knock something off but if they say no then don't be disappointed, our mini was £16995 at a suzuki dealer, i'm fairly sure if it was at a Mini dealer it would have been £19995, i asked if there was any movement, they said no, i paid the advertised price as there was nothing similar in the uk with that spec at that price.

I think it's a good price to be fair and as a "manager special" has already been reduced once so I would surprised if it went much further down. If the car is straight I'm tempted to offer the ticket price and try and get some extended warranty thrown in, rather than haggle the price.

Do we think it being diesel is a bargaining point yet? Presumably not if it is priced in line with other diesel models (plus it's a EU6 engine).

Just remember that the word 'approved' means nothing.
Treat them with the cynicism that you would any other trader.

Yeah cheers will do. Only close up pictures of current tyres are rears which seem to be ContiPremium 5's which are ok. Will give the fronts a good check and see if there is any paperwork showing recent change.

Hi long story short I have busy couple of months coming up of buying and selling as this car we are viewing is a S Max to replace our current one, then I am looking to sell my RX8 very regretfully to help fund the new S Max - probably replacing it with something super cheap to run like an old Yaris...

...so if you are interested in a good. rust-free, just fully serviced RX8 231 then let me know wink

Depending on the size of the dealer consider waiting until the end of the month. I bought a car from part of a large nationwide group last month, told them I was ready to complete the deal in time to make their May numbers if they would do a deal at 12.5k on the 13k sticker price - which they did.

Doesn't matter, you'll get pestered anyway.

yep even at Audi, they will treat you like a second class citizen when it goes wrong compared to new buyers

As with dealers I find it helps to be realistic, honest and to the point. I am interested in X and want to pay Y. If your not taking the P most will deal with you. If not go elsewhere, don't waste your or their time.

And watch out for high interest rates and all the extra insurance nonsense they try to sell you, all of it can be bought if needed online vastly cheaper

Got lucky as we got a "veteran" sales guy who wasn't interested in selling any extras, waived the admin fee and through in a few bits for us plus a good PX price.

Great service from Hartwell Ford and the car is bought smile.

Thanks for all the advice.

Well done, see?, its not hard.
I do think some people 'make' it hard work for thermselves and the sales guy.
It should be enjoyable for both parties, not a standoff.
Enjoy OP.

When you have sorted the price out and you think the salesman wont budge any further and you are happy to sign up to the deal being offered, have a think, hum and ha over it.

Then commit to buy at those figures, IF they include something of value to you.

I always do that and ask for servicing & paint protection (I know most say its a rip off, but I genuinely think its worth having) to be thrown in.

Both are quite high margin items so its fairly easy for the dealer to chuck in.
