It's a rhetorical question I know, but does placing an ad on Gumtree just make you a magnet for complete halfwits? All I can say is thank god I didn't put my mobile number on the advert.

They have fked with Gumtree meaning you have to register with them before viewing any adverts. Tried to sell a perfectly decent MR2 and got no interest.

I think so

Facebook Marketplace is the current go-to place for getting rid of "cheap but good/too good to bin" stuff. People tend to have their own actual real name attached to it, and the interface is pretty straightforward, none of this email nonsense that is clearly far too much work for some people to use.

My wife uses it a lot and we've got rid of loads of old tat that we didn't need (and replaced it with new tat...)

I have not had much luck with FB marketplace. Had a chair repaired through someone on there and it was broken again after two months, found someone to fix my TV and he was useless and I ended up getting another TV, and only last week I bought an iPhone which has cost £100 to repair. The seller claimed it was fine when it left her and it must have broken on my 30-minute drive home. I think I will avoid it in the future.

You do still get muppets as you should expect, but we've used FB marketplace quite a few times now with great success.

I placed the ad last night and have had two comedy offers and one email that frankly I have no clue what they are attempting to say, offer or ask confused

There's some right dodgy scum on Facebook buy and sell...

The classic mistake I made was having a item 'dropped off' at my house.

Handed over the cash and then realised the item was a bit buggered...

Be careful!

Scammer's paradise too

A few months ago, I had a watch up for sale, Scammer tried it on, so I dragged it out for a bit of fun - he wasn't happy when he realised.

The watch didn't sell, so I waited a while and posted a new ad. Amazingly, the same scammer tried it on again. He only baled out when I told him I would deliver the watch by hand

Mrs Gary29 has bought and sold a few things on Shpock, seems easy enough, we put something up for sale in the morning and someone came that night, handed over cash and took it away, completely painless.

I have sold 100s of items on gumtree, admittedly no Stafford, mopeds, mobiles x boxes etc

Other than a few no shows people have been mostly ok

A lot of it I leave in our large porch and say if you like it post the money through the letter box, saves haggling

What are you selling

An Arlo wireless CCTV system. Not the sort of thing I imagined would attract the idiots, but clearly I know nothing!

Yes I can see why you’d get problems with that

I’d put some rules on the add

£x no haggling, if you turn up expecting to haggle you will leave disappointed

I also find saying call only weeds out moron

Shpock and facebook marketplace seem to be the big two in our neck of the woods, with eBay as a distinct 3rd (probably because of fees)

FB seems to be full of people who want everything for free, or if you'll deliver it...

Shpock has been fairly event free though.

Never used gumtree, I thought it went the way of MySpace after FB came along to be honest.

Sold a few things on Gumtree and it went quite well. Seems to have gone downhill.

I used Ebay in past & no issues (apart from the cost..) so tried Gumtree to sell a bicycle
What a nightmare, stalker from hell wouldn’t take no for an answer to his offer. Blocked his calls in the end, then the psycho tried to hijack me via whatsapp
Never again !
Still got the bike! Will take it to the top or give it away, rather than deal with scum
