Complex CAD drawings have layers you can turn off. Turning off layers you're not interested in reduces the amount of work the computer has to do and speeds up its response time for the things you are interested in. Threads should have a similar arrangement allowing readers to turn off layers with interminable exchanges about the precise meaning of the thread title and concentrate on the more relevant and enjoyable posts.

Do you mean filaments? I don’t think threads have layers.

No, no, I think they should have layers. They could be labyrinthine as well; the more tortuous the argument the harder they would be to find by accident. For example, when two fistycuffers are really going at it they could be redirected into their own layer within the thread that no one would attempt to discover. Let them go and argue the finer points of the meaning of the word 'rarity' in a layer far, far away and leave the rest of us to read anecdotes and look at pictures of cars.
