I think that I should say first off that this is not a criticism, but a genuine query from someone with limited IT knowledge and even more limited experience with the internet. Also not sure where I should post this really :)

What I was wondering was what is it that causes web-sites to require maintenance once or twice a week? A few times over the last few months PH has gone into slow-mo and had to be closed down whilst it gets sorted out, usually very quickly I might add.

Does it tend to be a programming issue or is it usually related to heavy traffic?

As I say I’m only asking as it was a question I was pondering last night.

Thanks

John

Think the recent ones are due to programming Stuff that the Tedmiester is doing. To speed stuff up, theres an new search engine that has been tinkered with over the last few weeks and other stuff.

The Gassing Station has evolved over the last five years, from something originally built around MS Access and getting one post every 10 minutes or so.

Traffic has grown to a point now where in busy times there's a new post every few seconds. Database 'contention' was becoming a big problem because of the way the data was stored so I needed to re-engineer things.

Rather than do a big bang conversion (which had its merits), I elected to do it in small stages (less risk).

So the maintenance windows have either been me doing conversions, or more often trying to nurse the system in very busy times. However, the process is largely complete now and the servers have been ticking along beautifully for the last 24 hours (with one brief exception - looking into that).

You may have noticed that things are generally running quicker today than they have done for some weeks.

Thanks for your replies.

The perils of fame hey?

Great site but far too addictive! Down times for the site appear to be the only time I get any work done at the moment!

Cheers,

John
