Java 2 - how to deploying apps

[mr_yogi]

Hi,

I haven't done any proper programming for a few years now but having done a bit of Java before I thought it would be a good place to get started.

I have downloaded the Java 2 SDK, installed it and got the sample (what is your name? ...Bob ...Hello Bob) program working and deployed using the tutorial.

In the past I used to compile the java files into class files and then execute them with the java command or execute them through a simple HTML page (in the case of an applett). Java 2 seems to use this auto deploy system and I can't seem to get any of my old, or sample java code to work :(

I have noticed where the sample (what is your name? ...Bob ...Hello Bob) program is deplyed there are JSP files and some XML files also :scratchchin:

I've tried messing around with the auto deploy tool but it only listed my files in the browser :moan:

Does anyone know of a nice step by step tutorial to bet me going or if it's very simply can anyone help?

PS: I've tried looking through the Sun site but couldn't find what I was looking for!

Thanks :)

Sounds to me as though you've downloaded the J2EE (Enterprise Edition) development kit. This includes things like jsps, sevlets and EJBs.

For what you're after (console apps and windowing apps) you need the J2SE development kit. The latest version of which is 1.5 (although Sun's marketers refer to Java 1.2+ as Java 2 )

Have a look at http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp for the download.
