Routine reluctor ring swap turned into X2 new driveshafts!
They were so badly rusted onto the shafts, original shafts were getting chewed to get em off, even the hub bolt was non existent from rust (so had to be ground out) - now I have worked on rusty old cars before, but I didn't expect it to be this bad, so it has taken 7 years to get this bad.
The car is a (2012 318d E91 111,000 miles) so its not been hanging about, but either its such a bad design or the climate is just rife for this to happen, are BM's prone to such bad rust in these parts?

Funnily enough I just got my 1 Series dropped off yesterday after having exactly the same issue. I sadly don't have the facilities or enough of a clue to do the work myself, so got my friendly Indy to pick it up and fit the repair kit. Both sides had gone on mine, it was apparently a very delicate job to get the old rings off without damaging anything else and took a couple of days and 6 hours labour to do. Add in a major service my wallet is smarting slightly.
Mine's a 2008 125i with 137k on the clock, so it's also been around a bit. Got it done in the nick of time looking at the weather as well - even though I was quite enjoying driving round with TCS etc off, I am enjoying the extra security when splashing around the Midlands
In answer to your question I suspect it is a bit of both - minimal rust-proofing on BMW's part pushed over the edge by our lovely climate.
