Nasal Polyps

I've been have ongoing facial / discomfort for 9-10months now, lots of investigation work, tooth removed and am lined up to have a dental implant removed in the area of the discomfort in a couple of weeks time, though I have been told they don't necessarily think its the implant. I had a camera down the nose and on the side I get the pain they found a large nasal polyp, which they recommend I have removed, though I don't get sinus infections / sense of smell is fine. Anyone else had a nasal poloyp and what kind of symptoms did you get, did you a dull kind of sore pain in the sinus ?

Oh no. Feel sorry for you.. The recovery is not fun and you won't believe the pressure exerted on the nose by a simple thing like leaning forward... I could not breathe out thru my nose due to the polyps. I never felt the op... they knock you out. The pain starts after a few hours. I went private simply as I wanted to have it done urgently. Not pleasant but well worth it after its all over.. Good luck

Thanks did yours create any discomfort in the sinus / check area before you had them removed ? I don't want to the polyp removed unless I'm sure its causing the discomfort as I have no other polyp symptoms my breathing / sense of smell is fine.

Wife had surgery for polyps

Her symptoms were a mostly permanently blocked nose, loss of sense of smell and to a lesser degree taste
When the nose wasnt blocked, which was rare, she produced heroic amounts of snot
There was never any pain

My symptoms are similar to numtumfutunch's wife with the exception that I did suffer some sinus pain. Similar to suffering from a permanent heavy cold.

I didn't find the polypectomy too bad. A bit groggy for a day or two, but I began to feell better from the lack of polyps within a week or so I think. Signed-off work for a fortnight, but this was primarily to reduce the risk of infection.

I’ve had 3/4 erthmoidectomies polyp removal. The surgeon said it’s like mowing the grass!

Firstly get yourself some Avamys nasal spray. It’s a mild steroid and used daily it can reduce or prevent polyps. It’s irritation of the linings that cause them to erupt.

I’ve never had pain with any of mine just the congestion, not being able to breathe runny nose etc. The first surgery they did do a CT scan first so that might be an idea to see if they can find the source of your pain.

The surgery is really just them pulling them out, when you wake it’s likely your nose will be packed. This is removed the following day, it’s uncomfortable but not painful. You’ll be shocked at the length of cotton wool shoved up there. It feels like your brain is being pulled out of your nose. A few seconds later the relief of being able to breathe through your nose again is wonderful. I had no post operative pain at all in any of my operations.

My last surgery I asked the surgeon not to pack me unless he needed to. Pleasantly surprised when I woke to find no packing.

I know you won’t be able to stop the nerves but this really is a simple procedure

One sided nasal polyps need to be removed to make sure they are just a polyp as nasal polyposis is classically both sided. That being said the vast majority of one sided nasal polyps are just that.

If the implant is around the site of pain its probably worth getting the implant out to make sure it isn't that.

Same as the above for me and i've had the op 3 times now as they have a habit of coming back especially for those with Asthma for some reason.

I've had the op 3 times now but didnt really have any pain prior to the op.

My Surgeon is professor Kotecha who is pretty much the best in the business but he is now strictly private only but i can seriously recommend him.

I use sterimar nasal spray on a daily basis and it does help but as i said they have a habit of coming back.

I had zero sense of smell and my taste was affected too but once you get the operation done its a revelation.

The only unpleasant part is when they take the padding out of your nostrils the day after the op.
