Would it not help to split out, for example French Bred, Ford 'normal' and RS/ST, etc?

I think your proposal has some merit. Another example of where it might make sense to look at the forum structure is having Audi, VW, Seat and Skoda all lumped together.

Going down this route opens a whole range of possible changes such as the Mercedes section becoming (for example) ‘Mercedes general’ ‘AMG’ and ‘Mercedes classics’. Is this subdivision and hence having some very quiet sections something we want?

Reminds me of this from Sniff Petrol:
One-make forum has too many sub-forums

The Ford sub-forum certainly isn't busy enough to split. There might be merit in a system where you subscribe to each sub-forum, but the more you divide things up, the less likely people are to casually browse them. You don't get a critical mass of active participants.

Yep, but if you are into, for example, Focus Rs and you land on a general forum full of C-Max, Mondeo, Seirra threads you'll go elsewhere. Its a little bit of chicken and egg of course.

But there are some like the VW and French ones that surely could be split out into , at the very least their own brands.
